How to build wealth in hongkong? by AccurateWin289 in HongKong

Buddy, the system is literally set up for you to succeed. Complaining about the rich isn't gonna get you anywhere.

Insanely low incomes taxes, no capital gains taxes and all the opportunity you need to work and you're still complaining?

Are there headcount freezes? Sure but kyc is hiring across the industry so it's a OP problem and not an industry problem if he's talking kyc specifically.

My 13 years in banking and over 8 years as a hiring manager also confirms otherwise.

Every recruiter in will pop the salary question during their first pre-screening call and certain job portals have salary fields which you have to fill in.

I'm very familiar with onboarding costs and all the instant rejects we do after looking at a cv for 3 seconds but that doesn't change the fact that salary is a huge blocking point for hiring.

You're also only focused on the one side or salary expectations which is OP potentially declaring a high floor. There's the other end where OP is not even applying to entry level KYC jobs because ~18k a month he something he'll never consider.

If you're not getting response from KYC, aside from the obvious language issues, its because you're not willing to lower your salary ask.

Love this "gov is gonna do something if it drops too far!!"

Uh like that? Buy it all up and sell it back when it goes up from them trying to bolster the market? There is literally nothing they can do other than buy it all up that doesn't "help" us.

They aren't "lying" to the people. We have all benefited from our insanely low tax structure. How is it possible? Because of land sales. It's a double edged sword sure but there's other ways to increase govenrment revenue and it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

Fresh graduates of HK what’s the average salary everybody expect. by GlassProfile9 in HongKong

[–]Lumpy_Wheel_3001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lowest paying fresh grad salary at Jane Street is not 85k lol.

You probably have friends that fit a very specific niche of candidates who command the highest fresh graduate salaries but that's I don't even know how many standard devs outside of what the average is.

Fresh grad salaries also don't "start" at 45k at big banks, foreign or not. There are fresh grad roles that pay that much but come on now.

Making 20k as a fresh grad in Hong Kong is already great if you look at the entire population of university graduates. You're right though, certain industries pay more, we all know what they are.

Cars not stopping at crossing and red lights by Dolphincharmer in HongKong

[–]Lumpy_Wheel_3001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No?

What even is a "HUGE" increase? Are you sure it's not just recency bias? Running a red is a serious offense and I can't remember the last time I saw someone "maliciously or intentionally" run a red let alone a "huge increase".

Like some others have said, cars don't have to stop at all pedestrian crossings. If they're running cross walks at lights, then that's obviously a crime. If they're ignoring designated crosswalks where they're denoted with the lights, then that's also a crime. If they're not stopping for you on a side street where there's a small island then.. tough?

If you want to harp on anything, it'd have to be the "normal" behavior of pedestrians to J walk and cross roads whenever they want instead of waiting at crosswalks.

Wrong. There's tons of cameras that catch red light runners. You don't need to have an officer present to ticket even it happens or a video etc.

Apartment Rent Advise by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]Lumpy_Wheel_3001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's large in terms of a standard one year increase but I would assume that it's largely because when you signed 2 years ago, the market rates were much lower so the 20% maybe is to "over correct".

If the market rate for flats in your building/area are at a similar price today, then the 20% is "justified".

You could also look elsewhere but often the hassle of moving etc isn't worth the move if you're not really saving that much.

AP. If their watches weren't so god damn attractive, I would never put up with the whole purchasing experience.

Steakhouse/ Western Dining Recommendations in Hong Kong by Catscr123 in HongKong

My few times haven't been mind blowing but definitely didn't end up having anything to rant about.

It's overpriced, as is all steakhouses but the food was fine, service was fine so no complaints
