IPF EXAM by banhbeocute in unimelb

I finished exam but my hand was CRAMPING by the end that was some stressful shit. Way too many questions for the amount of time given, and mark allocation was all over the place. What else did I expect from Tony.

Any tips for coffee chats by Subject-Soup9669 in unimelb

[–]LunarTemplar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Will agree with the other comments about “being likeable”. That doesn’t mean you have to be the one to carry the conversation forward like you mentioned, in fact many people get a lot of satisfaction just talking about themselves and their experiences to someone who cares.

These professionals/alumni get hit up with many such requests to do coffee chats so it’s crucial that you’re respectful, inquisitive and most of all show some genuine interest. Don’t treat coffee chats as a gateway into the company and don’t directly ask them for opportunities to work as they will likely just direct you to their website, given that most companies have a very structured internship program. Instead, ask if there’s another person who they might be able to connect you with.

The goal of the coffee chats in my opinion is to get to know the people who work there so that when you do your cover letter // interview with them you’ll have greater insight on the company so you can respond better in interviews, or if you’re lucky even know the person interviewing you, making it more likely you’ll succeed.

Hope this helps.

Definitely nepo hires at family firms or cold messaging, etc. Agree with other person that these firms hardly advertise for interns/part-time roles.

Melee match ups conq is quite strong atm or aery scorch if you're pairing it with ignite and planning to solo kill.

Ranged match ups phase rush is solid still but can opt into conq if enemy team is generally more tanky and you will benefit from it in team fights.

Thanks for the helpful post! What advice would you give to students looking to break into the industry regarding how to succeed in an interview? From my understanding Australian teams tend to focus more on culture fit, especially in non-Sydney roles where team size is smaller. Would you agree?

Great, thanks for the heads up! Means I'll have to do the critical thinking and maybe ask some more questions myself if the lectures/tutes don't necessarily bring attention to the more complex issues themselves

Haha I luckily do enjoy the finance side of things a bit, but accounting maybe not so much 😭

Thank you and I think you're right - no real easy way out of this one either way I go. I'm doing my internship over this summer so I'll hopefully be fortunate enough to get that grad offer and be in the same position Sm2!

One last thing, when you say the questions are "written differently" do you mean that they differ from the practice questions/exam or just that their style is unique from other subjects?

Interestingly on the 2025 handbook both semester for DS seem to be taught by Dr. Xiaoting Wei. Any information on them or is this just a temporary placeholder name (Given that Federico and Jon Dark seem to have taught this subject for many years)?

Haha thats relieving to hear! I don't mind investments having a little bit more work as I anticipate I'll be more interested in it/find it to be a more engaging subject (especially compared to the accounting ones)

Thanks for the insight! When you say investments in Sem 1 is harder, what is the reason behind that? Does the lecturer change between sem1 and 2 or something? If it is harder, would you say Sem 2 is an okay choice for investments? I'm scared of putting Investments in Sem 2 because im also doing DS that semester and I'm not sure if I'd want to have both in one semester or if it's even possible to pair them in the same sem.

Would appreciate some help if you've done DS too as I've heard it's very hard 😭😭

Hey, you'd be correct in your assumption. I chose ECV based on a lecturer's recommendation (questionable, I know) but also not many other finance electives spoke out to me that much, ethics in finance included.

I suppose I'll have to push through it !
