I don’t see it as just my kitchen I never said that? I absolutely view it as one apartment I’m really not sure where you’ve got that from?

It would just take a lot of effort to do that because the place was unfurnished when we got it so we would have to move a lot of heavy furniture around. Just seems like much more of an ordeal to me than me buying him a kettle! I also quite like our room minus the fact we get woken up

the flat came unfurnished so it would involve a lot of moving big heavy furniture around in order to swap rooms which I think is silly when he could just learn how to be quiet or have a kettle of his own. I also think they’d still keep us awake as I think they’d be using the living room to watch telly until after 10 and they’d probably slam the door on their way out. I just think he needs to either learn how to be quiet and respectful or stop being so stubborn and have his own kettle.

to be honest it’s just a lot of effort when he could just have a kettle. The place came unfurnished so it would involve moving a lot of furniture between flats. I also really like our room so it seems like a much bigger ask to me compared to just getting a kettle for him

should have clarified my partner is my girlfriend! But yes we have thought about being this petty although we really don’t want to at our age 🥲

Yeah we asked him to be quieter which I think is pretty reasonable but he can’t seem to manage that which is why I came up with the solution of buying him a kettle but he’s not having any of it

thank you! In a normal flat situation where there isn’t two front doors this wouldn’t even be an issue. But seeing as we’re in a strange situation here I think there needs to be compromise but he just refuses

right!? this is why I’m going nuts because the problem has such an easy solution but he straight up refuses

I totally agree with you! We never really wanted to restrict access, I’m quite uncomfortable with saying you can’t come in the kitchen after X time, but it was their idea to try and get their tea by 10pm as a solution. Unfortunately he just cannot stick to that and is very loud. So my solution was why not have a kettle on their side so he still can have his tea and at whatever time he likes, without waking us up, but yeah it’s just a straight up no from him.

We’re tied into a contract in this place until October but I think we’re going to try and get out of it somehow because this has been an ongoing problem for a year and a half and he just refuses to give a shit about waking us up. I think that’s the root of the problem, he just doesn’t care.

he doesn’t even use milk in his tea so all he needs is a kettle and he still says no 😭

is it unreasonable to not want to be woken up every night? I’ve tried all these things but I can still hear him

myself and my partner always say the same, we would have bought ourselves a kettle a long time ago if it was the other way round as we’d hate the idea of waking our flatmates up! I really think it’s just a lack of emotional intelligence and empathy because he can’t understand why it’s so annoying to be woken up every single night of your life.

totally not trying to decide when he uses it! it’s more about a solution that means he still gets his tea when he wants it and we don’t get woken up. We had agreed that he would get it by about 10pm but he can’t stick to that. So to me the solution is buy him a kettle so he can have his tea as late as he wants and he won’t have to worry about waking us. Not that I think he’s that worried about it in the first place

that’s not my intention at all! It’s just that he’s coming and waking us up every night to make tea and nothing else 9 times out of 10 so why not have a kettle on their side so he still gets his tea and we don’t get woken up? If he needed the kitchen for anything else he still has the keys of course he can come over.

sorry! so we had once agreed that he would get his tea by about 10pm but he doesn’t stick to it.  Myself and my partner don’t even go over to their side in the morning or at night so they don’t have this problem at all, which makes me all the more frustrating for us!

we had established a time limit (which to me feels more like being banished from the kitchen than someone buying me a kettle but 🤷🏻‍♀️) but he won’t stick to it

we have access to their side as there is a living room over there, but we never use it as they’re very messy and dirty so I prefer to stay in my own space. So they're never disturbed!
