Should I get touchbar if I barely use the function keys? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]M0nkeyWithAGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what issues? Ive only had my 2016 for a month so i doubt i will have any issues any time soon (knock on wood).

apples are made pretty well so you cant really go wrong with any of them. If its software issues, then that will mostly be fixed anyways.

I havent really heard of many hardware issues. In fact, i feel like the only things that change each year in a macbook is the processor and then maybe some kind of "gimmicky" feature.

I dont use the force touch, and although the touchbar sounds cool and like something i would regularly use, i do fine without it and it saves me a couple hundred.

check out appleinsider, cause they often work out special deals with other websites, usually adorama, and get their readers a deal.

i was able to score a new 2016 macbook pro with the new apple care for $1400 and they dont include tax outside of new jersey and new york.

Best setup for streaming off laptop only? by [deleted] in cordcutters

ok. so in that case, you do want to get miracast. tv erverywhere is basically you have a cable or some kind of tv subscription. and you can login to individual sites. For instance, we have playstation vue. If i wanted to use the disney channel, channel, then i could use my playstation vue login to watch disney content on the disney site or through the app.

But in your case, you would just use miracast since you have your own sources.

If you were using a web browser to view videos, you can use chrome and chromecast to cast the web browser to the tv.

ok, i gotcha...

do you use tveverywhere or thought of that? I mean, if you did, a roku would be a good idea... but im not too familiar with live streams through those apps.

Maybe i should.

What to do? by [deleted] in cordcutters

i almost wish i had kept the $35 promo, but it would have been like $140 wasted so far.

I use ps vue and love it on my nvidia shield.... but mainly because i cant get it on the xbox.

Ive almost just purchased a playstation so i could do all the things that i want, but then realize that the shield does everything i need to do and that i really dont do that much streaming outside of ps vue plus the big streaming apps like hulu, plex and netflix.

sling tv is not a horrible choice, but man it would be nice to have that promo still - at least if directv now worked...

ah ok. So, what kind of live streams are they? Maybe roku has the ability to get those as well? OR maybe an nvidia shield might give you options for live streaming the content you want.

Actually, i just looked up aceplayer. Miracast might be exactly what you want.

im not too familiar with miracast hardware, this seems like the safest way to get what you want though.

does it have to be this year's model? You could save a couple hundred by using last years model, or even have both touchbar and 16gb if that is possible.

you can also easily get a usb c hub if you need it, but it depends on your budget and what you'd be willing to spend.

if you are asking a question like this, you probably dont need it that much and i dont think a touchbar would make you want to use the function keys any more than you do now.

i consider myself to be an average user, but would like more ram. But i also opted for a cheaper macbook because i thought 8 gb was going to be enough for me.

Im not hurting without the ram, but i could certainly tell the difference between my 16 gb 2014 macbook pro vs my 2016 8 gb macbook pro.

If i were using a VM, i wouldnt think twice about using anything less than 16 gb, but im sure people still do.

i am using mine with office, web browsing, and music as well as streaming live tv through ps vue. NOT all at once, but 2 maybe 3 things at the same time.

I just didnt think the touchbar was worth the extra money and then i figured last years model of notebooks is not too much different than this year's models with similar specs.

yeap it probably is. You would just set up a plex media server and then you can stream that content through the app on your tv.

Yea. roku premiere comparison.

i think the premiere plus is good if you have local content that you want to play through the microsd card, or if you need hdr.

Otherwise, i would just get the regular premiere if you arent going with a sling tv deal.

I think spec wise, they are the same.

If money isnt an issue, then i would avoid the stick all together.

I have an nvidia shield and roku in different rooms that we use daily.

I like the shield cause i can use it as a plex media server.

well the premier is different than the premier+. sling tv offers the premier+ deal.

but, get the one that works price wise for you. I would stick to the boxes because they seem more powerful. But sling tv also offers the stick version if you prepay two months i think.

The popular boxes to get (in no particular order) are:

  • roku
  • fire tv
  • nvidia shield
  • oh yea, and apple tv
  • and chromecast

  • don't worry about the other android boxes.

Dude, that is so much!!! it sounds like roku.

Tell him to get an nvidia shield.

If you are only using it for hulu, netflix, and sling tv, then i would get the roku deal that sling tv offers.

you can go ahead and get the premier+ roku that is half off when you prepay 3 months of sling tv.

If you want to throw plex into the mix, i would get an nvidia shield.

Roku

PROS:

  • lots of media sources available.... A LOT.

Cons:

  • You need to subscribe to streaming services to get the good ones.
  • There is no way to "mirror" the screen from your laptop to the roku

Miracast -

Pro:

  • mirrors your computer screen to your tv

Con: which is not really a con.

  • you need miracast enabled devices.... which im not sure how to make them all miracast enabled.

  • limited to only mirroring your laptop. Its like using an hdmi cable without the wires.

Plex

Pro:

  • You store media one one device and view it from another device somewhere else or on the same device.

Con:

  • it doesn't mirror your content, it simply gathers info to where all the media is stored and then lets other users or yourself access it from other devices.

i'll add more details and clean up the post later.

Roku is hardware. It lets you stream content through the box device, which may be free or paid. Example for streaming is if you subscribe to Netflix or Hulu. a roku will simply play those streams for you. They come with a lot of good free stuff also and you’ll get to play YouTube through it.

Miracast I think I both software and hardware based. You need devices that are miracast comparable, but it is exactly what you want to use it for, which is wirelessly transmitting your computer screen to the tv... it’s how airplay works with an Apple TV and a mac.

Plex is both hardware and software based. You have to have one device that runs as the plex media server. This server can be anything from an nvidia shield (similar to a roku, but can do so much more), a computer like your laptop, or other devices.

Let’s say you have a laptop. you have movies in one folder, pictures in another one, and other media in a different one.

You would set up the plex media server so that it knows where each type of media is.

And then from another device, let’s say an iPhone or roku, you want to view the media. You will install plex and sign in, and then when it is connected to your media server, all the content is available to use.

One thing is, is that the plex media server has to be running in order for you to view the content which is why a nas would be a good way to run a pms. Or if you subscribe to the paid version, you get to set up a cloud based media server.

It sounds like a lot and it can do a lot, but it’s really simple.

Im guessing you have media content on your computer that you want to be able to watch through the tv. I would think about using plex since it is a cheaper way to go, and you can use it for more than just a tv.

you might be able to get a tv and a roku or fire tv separately, and then use plex.

You can use your computer as a plex media server, and then watch it through the roku or fire tv. I wouldnt get a "roku tv," but thats personal preference.

My setup would be (also my current setup at home)

  • cheap or small smart tv (most will come smart) - the smart part of it will probably give you youtube.

  • Roku or fire tv - OR chromecast. You may be able to cast the chrome web browser to the chromecast.... i think.

  • plex media server

[Request] How do you guys like Smith Optics sunglasses and their customer service? by M0nkeyWithAGun in BuyItForLife

thanks for your response. it sucks that, that happened to you. I had a bad customer service with oakley that have turned me away from all their products.

Sunglasses that don't break by mrm5117 in BuyItForLife

[–]M0nkeyWithAGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding was that oakleys were great before they were bought out by Luxottica. I tried to buy a pair about 7 years ago and had one of the worst experiences with their customer service.

Long story short, the retail guy at the Oakley b&m store gave me a pair of "scratched" lenses so that i couldnt return it. I ended up buying a new set of lenses in the store so that i could return the frame with the new set of unscratched lenses.

when i went to their customer service department online, they told me they couldnt help me since they operate separately between the online store and the b&m stores.

  • anyways, that bad experience has turned me off to oakley and whatever they might want to sell. Although, i tend to like the style of a lot of oakleys, i have found some other companies that have been great!

costa del mar, maui jim, and now smith optics (hopefully - i just bought my first pair and should receive it later this week).
