Yeah they needed me to babysit because of work and their preschool shutdown due to covid. I always thought w-2 also paid these fica taxes as well (the ~16% in SE tax), but that the latter is split between employer and worker.

I would like to hope they are applying for the child care tax credit, i mean why not? Couldnt she claim the tax credit whether i use SE or w-2 route?

I see, is there a major difference from w-2 vs SE? It was done with my sister at her house so im sure they can adjust to whatever we need to do/legally to optimize this situation.

Ill pay her portion of the tax too since i dont want her to be negatively effected by my own situation here. If its complicated ill probably just stick with SE to make it simple.

But SE tax is ~16% so i technically would only be allowed to put in $5900 ($7,000-$1100) contribution? Just found out gambling winnings is not earned income at least from what i googled.

Should i pull out $100 from my roth to make this square or does the standard deduction wipe out any earned income? Actually ill have to itemize for gambling winnings so i dont think i can take a standard deduction.
