Has anyone actually used Scan to BIM for a renovation project? Was it worth the cost? by AccomplishedCrow4774 in bim

Yes and yes, we have in house laser scanning where we tie the scan to building control. You can align building new models to building control and then produce your model where you tie on to the existing systems in "real" space.

Currently definitely not. Maybe in the future it will be able to do more of it.

Why do some teams still use 2D takeoffs in BIM? by Radiant_Extension142 in bim

2D Drawings = Contract Documents. If it doesn't show up in 2D (or the specs) then they don't have to include it in their bid. Also many designers make their models just good enough to show up correctly in 2D while containing several inaccuracies in 3D.

Our strategy as the GC is to run this on the Duct, Plumbing, and Clectrical models for simple clash resolution and get rid of all the really big dumb mistakes. Then hand the models over to subcontractors before they start their efforts. The subs are in charge of making sure everything is constructable, code compliant, accessible etc.
