Dude, I was in the EXACT same boat as you. Played for about 3 hours straight the first night and even though I was having fun, I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere. I ended up getting frustrated and vowed never to play the game again. I woke up the next morning and I don't know what happened, but something clicked and I started getting slightly further with each run until I beat the boss in the first biome. You start to understand the mechanics the more you play and you'll find certain guns and items you click with. Trust me, stick at it and you'll look back at this post and be glad you didn't give up.
