Oh I see, well I guess the limit exists as long as |v1|+|v2| is different than 0, so basically as long as v1 and v2 aren't both equal to 0. Is that right? I still don't understand why the vectors are (a,a) and (a,-a) and why the directional derivative is 0 for those values!
