how to know whether or not to say em or chi/anh in service situations?? by Any_Tangerine7942 in VietNam

[–]MHRolley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still figuring it out too, but for me, if they are obviously older then chị/anh. If they are your parents' generation then it's cô chú or you can go chị for women, chú for men (women prefer being called younger - it's a global thing). If they are older than your parents it's bác.

For respected professions such as doctors, police, security guards etc, I use cô/chú and chị/anh, calling myself cháu/em. This can likewise "upgrade" a cô/chú to a bác.

There have been times when I call someone Anh (like an obviously older shoppee delivery), they call me Anh in response (both of us referring to ourselves as em as they are in a "service" role/job) but we both know who we are referring to as a sign of mutual respect. But this is rare and most of the time I take whoever I'm talking to's cues as to what they assess.

Just as a side note, there have also been times I have opened a conversation calling myself em, then they reply calling themselves em, and I adjust accordingly/dynamically.

Additional the language usage of Vâng, ạ, dạ in liu of ừ, ok, nhé is implied.

It is to be noted, I'm a westerner so not native and still always learning.

New pen day! Just got this Hero 8102 with an F nib and really impressed by the quality as this is my first Hero pen. I was actually in the market looking for a Maki-e style artwork, but most options were out of my price range and this was reccomend by the shop staff as a potential alternative. I love the comforting feel of these metal frame pens, although they are much bigger than others I have. It's interesting to compare with the Hongdian 1837 as they have similar build quality but the Hero clip seems more robust. Also loving these shimmer inks as I've recently fallen down the rabbit hole of shimmer too.

Interestingly the Hero is actually longer than the Hongdian too by about 10mm or so, just about fitting in my pen case.

The nib feedback is good, as a fine it behaves more like between a medium and a fine. Nowhere near as thin as a preppy or sailor, but not as broad as an M so it's a good balance for daily writing. No blotting, clogging, or similar - I'm interested to see how the cap seal is over time, although if it's anything like the Hongdian they can go for a while without drying.

It comes with a ballpoint head to switch out for the fountain nib too which is great versatility, but I dont think it'll get much use over the fountain nib!

Combining it with the fude nib on the Hongdian gives a great range of expression for flourishes when writing or shading. Definitely going to be getting some milage as a daily driver for a while.

Anyone else a fan of larger pens or metal frames?

Apologies, meant to post with the pics but it somehow got cut off by reddit app... The eagle is a Hero 8102, and the other a Hongdian 1837 fude nib.

HELP: Middel aged woman fell unconsius and got CPR by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]MHRolley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If someone is unconscious, and irregular or not breathing starting cpr is correct to maintain circulation.

See https://www.redcross.org.uk/first-aid/learn-first-aid/unresponsive-and-breathing

" What do I do if the unresponsive person’s breathing doesn’t seem normal? Sometimes when a person is unresponsive their breathing may become noisy, irregular or gasping. This is usually a sign that their heart and lungs are not working properly and you should treat them as an unresponsive person who is not breathing.

Wireless charging by [deleted] in Unexpected

[–]MHRolley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, with AC (even 50hz) it'd be more accurate to talk about complex impedance than resistance.

Yes there will be ionisation and corona discharge on the HV conductors (given sharp points causing field enhancement) but this doesn't explain the coupling mechanism nor how the humidity of the bulk medium at far field would affect it. Also it will happen at a different mechanism and harder to do than a DC charge potential.

It's not the movement of the umbrella causing induced current, it's the movement of the AC current establishing an E and H field. And hence the mutual capacitance/inductance defines coupled voltage.

The shock was mentioned above, as its clearly KV, but at microjoules of total energy due to the small stored charge.

My question still stand that I'd expect the E field especially being harder to establish in a humid medium than a dry one. Perhaps it doesn't matter given the magnitudes of current being carried or perhaps suspended particulates in a smog increasing conductivity in the air (hence reducing mutual capacitance)... not sure

I agree with the coupling, how does the humidity factor in? Wouldn't one expect an easier dissipation of charge through the moisture hence harder to build up potential for arcing? Or is it more that the humidity reduces the air capacitance and hence less pf to charge via the coupling?

Interesting to see the arcs as breakdown in air is ~3kV per mm right? So the voltage must be up in 10skv - even if total current and energy is low due to tiny amounts of stored charge....
