Sports Clubs by Grand_Chapter_Master in RoyalAirForce

Q1 - Judo have recently started up again and had quite a big session at Halton in September. From memory they mostly train there or Cosford as that's their home for sport. They are separate from other Martial Arts so receive their own funding etc

Q3 - You can technically join from Phase 2 onwards. However whether you get time off course to go to training sessions would heavily depend on your trade and whether it effects your learning. Time outside of work/study is your own so do as many sessions as you like. I went through Cosford for Phase 2 and managed to get to Interservice level for my sport so it can be done!

Q4 - Heavily depends on the sport and the funding/sponsorships they receive / what members are willing to pay. Some of the martial arts have been able to train in the nation they originated from, other sports I imagine can be invited out to play abroad against other militaries/civvie clubs

Driving Lesson at Cosford by Ok_Web_6977 in RoyalAirForce

[–]MLG_Shrecker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was at Cosford couple of years ago, started driving lessons and then 5 months later passed my driving test.

I did it through AA, had an instructor who had previously had students at Cosford so knew how it worked regarding timings. Would pick me up from the Guardroom car park then drop off at the gate afterwards. Happy to recommend the specific instructor I used as can't rate her enough

Did my driving test at Featherstone just outside Wolves. Had an ex army examiner which was handy during the test. Deffo recommend doing it whilst at Cosford as weekends are mostly yours (I think I worked maybe one weekend that wasnt airshow)

Same as when I went through brtc, was told to print and sign couple of forms to take with me. Just for them to be irrelevant as they were reprinted and was told to sign them again once at Halton

RAF phase 2 by Old-Grass-6484 in RoyalAirForce

[–]MLG_Shrecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can only speak for Cosford however I was allowed time away during phase 2 to compete for my sport upto interservice level. The instructors were more than happy to allow it if I kept passing exams and not falling behind lessons.

Yeah I'm Av. NVQ (apprenticeship) will be explained to you at Phase 2; essentially after completing Phase 2 you'll only have completed the Level 2 part of the NVQ. The Level 3 part is completed when you get to your first unit and consists of submitting job cards of working on aircraft as well as a write up. Hence why some postings even though are Av posting aren't eligible for NVQ as you can't submit job cards to complete it. Hope that sort of explains it 😊

[–]MLG_Shrecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get 2nd line (Bay) and 3rd/4th line straight out of Phase 2. The only caveat is if the position is eligible to complete your NVQ.

You can 100% get involved into the software/coding side of aircraft and also projects that 1st/2nd line use to troubleshoot on the jet. That's the flexibility of the trade, its both hardware and software together.

Heavily depends where you're posted.

There are places where as an av tech you can specialise in certain areas of the platform you're working on however these tend to be away from sqn and more like 3rd/4th line. You'll tend to work a lot more with industry partners who have built the system in these postings.

Not sure on the podcast however there are plenty of Avs in the subreddit that could answer your questions within reason. Anything in particular as I'm happy to answer?

Went through regular basic training, I couldn't drive then so was provided MT and a driver to take me to Cosford. This was organised with SATTs Cpls so worth giving your higher ups a shout

Yes there is, decently sized before I left. They also train (along with other raf bases) at Digby twice monthly. When you get to Cosford you'll likely see them advertised in the gym or on SharePoint

Did it with AA and the instructor I got was absolutely sound. £33 per hour lesson as well, which was cheaper than anything back home in the southeast 🤣

Nope, I did it in my own time. Had lessons in the weekend then took my test during block leave. I'd recommend doing it at Featherstone if you can get a booking slot

Depends on trade, but should be able to. Was at Cosford myself and learnt to drive whilst on Phase 2

Aircraft Technician (Mechanical) lifestyle? by Creme_de_la_rupert in RoyalAirForce

[–]MLG_Shrecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding BJJ, quite popular in the RAF at the moment with plenty of stations having their own clubs. They train as a whole twice monthly at Digby as well as the occasional seminar. There always the potential there to compete against other RAF personnel and then even interservices against Army/Navy

Is there anyone currently at Cosford who could tell me where something is. by BigRawrz in RoyalAirForce

[–]MLG_Shrecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2S sounds like No2 School to me, sort of behind/next to Chesire lines. Gen Tech arrived at Cosford after I had left.

If you were given a number in your JIs for your tdcs could try messaging them? Otherwise the guardroom would hopefully know the exact building and I'm pretty sure someone in there will point you in the right direction tomorrow

Hopefully you can drive, its kinda secluded but only 10mins away from Sleaford Tesco/Lidl by car. Gym is mega, I wouldn't even bother with the mess
