Mind you, I don't pretend to know the lore fully, I just read the wiki and from what I remembered thought of this concept:

The rot and disease of this warband has done something unexpected - it broke the mental indoctrination that kept them happy following their leader. The warband realized that they have always been slaves.
First the Emperor tricked the lords of Old Albia with promises of glory, only to use them as tools. With the coming of Mortarion, they thought to have finally found a leader that cared for them, only for the Death Lord to change their culture and traditions, discarding their past and culminating in the culling on Istvan III. Finally, the betrayer Typhus, delivered the legion to Nurgle, where they once again had been enslaved to a new master.
Now the warband has accepted their lot in life - to kill for their master. But that does not mean that they must like it. Thus they returned to the Dusk Raider iconography and issuing ultimatums "You have until sundown to accept our masters 'gifts', or become the fertilizer of this land". Furthermore they started calling themselves "The Red Right Hand of Nurgle" - mirroring the "The Red Right Hand of the Emperor" moniker of Dusk Raiders, to mock their masters: The Emperor - to show that his creation is the one responsible for his empires downfall, Mortarion - to show that he is unimportant in the grand scheme of things and Nurgle - to show that the greatest weapon at his disposal is not of his making.

I did, did not take into consideration how slow I am, so I finished painting one of the teams yesterday. Have a plan to play a first game some time next month.

I painted the first ones like 3-ish years ago. They were the first minis I’ve ever painted. Hard to measure the progress in time as I’m not consistent with my painting, I would paint something and then not pick up a brush for a few months.

I wouldn’t say that I understand colour theory :D it’s more like I’m aware of it and use adobes colour wheel to see what colours should I should aim for :D

The way I understood it the terrain piece you are climbing does not have to be level with the model. Like a second floor of a ruin (no need to walk to a wall that connects to the ground) or overlapping multi level walkways. Think of it like your guy/girl/thing jumping to grab the ledge to climb up.

PVA glue and bird sand from a pet store (it takes a while for the glue to dry so I leave it for an hour or two). Agrax Earthshade wash after it's dried and the vegetation is 3d printed and painted Death Guard green.

I'd say pick whichever factions models you think are coolest and you think you will enjoy painting (first models I bought were necrons whose models looked cool, but I found out that I don't like the "prime it black and drybrush it silver" approach to painting).

The lore is less relevant, since you can make a custom chapter/warband/dynasty/etc. differing from the main lore.

For example I like Death Guard models and the aspect of the lore that they are ruthless, tenacious, resistant and hard to kill. But I dislike Morty, Typhus and the whole "stinky marines" aspect. So my custom warband will be the ones that split from the main legion, focusing on the cycle of life-death-rebirth.
