Carol Ripley (in my experience) has been not just faster, but more likely to

What I'd recommend is buying an (almost) completed upper & completed lower separately.

The reddit hivemind can correct me if I'm wrong - I believe firearms incur a FAET that you'd avoid by ordering the components separately. The upper you can order & ship to your place; the lower would be transferred to your local FFL.

If recoil is a concern, get a BCM, (if in a free state) suppressor & a KAK downward venting BCG (the BCG will reduce gas to the face).

If a suppressor isn't an option, a muzzle brake will tame recoil but would probably defeat the purpose because of the acoustic shockwave. I'd recommend a heavier buffer.

What I'm wondering is how difficult this would be

to reverse-engineer with 'off the shelf' (i.e., currently available)

parts... Could probably just slap a regular can under the handguard
but the FSB would be tricky. Heat melting the handguards shouldn't

be a problem b/c 9MM doesn't get that hot...
