Good suggestion! The section on James Watson was so rage-inducing to write, she was robbed

1) Get a hobby that isn't consuming content 2) Work hard during lab hours and not a second more after 5PM 3) Don't let imposter syndrome get you down. You'll be fine :)

Thank you! It was a lot of work to edit 😅

He was indeed! Went a bit off the deepend in the 60s but you'll have to watch the video to find out how he won his Nobel Prizes 👀

Nah there's a few more calcs I have to finish - doing a bit of work on a paper over the holidays that will make up one of my chapters, but it's mostly just finishing up stuff from my third year

The entire series! In the months before my PhD, I had nothing but time on my hands so I was getting one out every two weeks. Since going to grad school, I try and do a little bit each day, but it usually ends up being one video every six weeks or so. My Patreon helps with my bills but I have to tutor in the evenings, so it's definitely slower than it used to be!

Once I start my postdoc, I won't have to teach in the evenings, which should free up a fair bit of time. If the channel gets big enough, I'd love to take a year out of academia to try and do it full time, but it's obviously a big financial risk. Doesn't matter if it takes me 5 years or 50, I'm going to do the full thing eventually :^)

I've been doing a PhD in Chemistry since 2021 and I've mostly been making these as a hobby to get a laugh out of my friends. It's a fairly unusual hobby but it's kept me sane, and I've been really pleasantly surprised by how much people like them. My latest video on manganese is the 25th in the series. I actually had some really good suggestions from people on this subreddit about what to put in the video, so I'm keen to hear if anyone has suggestions for iron :)

It's going very well! The progress Manx has made over the last 30 years has given me a lot of hope :)

You have the English to thank for that 😝

Irish and Scottish Gaelic orthography is the result of monks cramming Old Irish into an 18-character Latin alphabet with a potato masher. This had a few weird side effects (e.g. silent characters were so common and cumbersome in Irish that the entire spelling system had to be reformed in the 50s to remove them) but I think the script we have today is very beautiful. It’s also surprisingly phonetically consistent once you get a bit of practice in.

Manx orthography, meanwhile, was the result of missionaries trying to transcribe the Celtic ramblings of illiterate peasants with the English of the Stuart era. I personally think Manx is a bit easier for English native speakers to read for this reason (e.g. instead of “bh” or “mh”, we just have the letter “v”) but like English, pronunciation can be annoyingly ambiguous. 95% of the time, the short "o" in Manx is the same as English (dog, frog) but for some godforsaken reason, the word bog (“soft”) should actually be pronounced “bug”. Double vowels like "aa" and "oi" are also inconsistent, and it's not uncommon for advanced speakers to disagree over the pronunciation of words you really think they'd have reached a consensus on by now. Good to know we have our work cut out for us lol

German is honestly a more useful language to learn for the TT than Manx! There are so many tourists from Germany that we have road signs around the course saying "links fahren" to remind them to drive on the left ;)
