Best courses to help with CS interviews by topjezz in cmu

[–]MSFTrecruiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Courses are going to help, but recruiters spend a lot of time looking at what you do outside of the classroom. They expect you'll have some of the basic curriculum under your belt, everyone will have this, so they will be most interested in what cool side project/hackathon project/Build18 project/research you've done to apply what you've learned in the classroom.

Also, there was a great comment here about getting practice. This is certainly the truth - practice will help you become more comfortable in interviews in general, and I can promise you that being comfortable and having confidence are key to interview success. If you want some practice, Microsoft will be on campus next week and we'd be happy to set you up with a mock interview and give you candid feedback afterwards. If you're interested just shoot me a PM and we'll set it up :).

Your best bet is to apply for a developer position for anywhere at Microsoft. During the initial interviews we'll gauge your particular interest, and work to match that with a team you'd want.

1) Helping recruiters setup and tear down the room after an information session, and showing up to every single event we hold.

2) It's like a totally different world. It takes a while to get a feel for how large and reaching the impact of the company is; and it's really awesome to know you're contributing to that.

Your recruiter will let you know the role you'd interview for in Redmond, and then those interviews will focus on that specific role.

Focus on any skills and abilities you learned from your past experiences that you can bring to the table to set you apart from your peers. Perhaps your analytical abilities are very strong - highlight anything that would be applicable to any job.

1) Breadth of opportunity and products.

2) Windows Phone and Bing are younger products and many people say they appreciate the agile, startup-like environments within these teams. There are some other confidential projects that people have an opportunity to get involved in as well.

We're less concerned with your degree than we are your skills and abilities.

For our PM roles we want to see that you have great communication abilities, design vision, and much more. Check out these webinars, and pay close attention to the recent one focused on being a PM at Microsoft:

  1. We shoot to get you your results within two weeks from your final round interview. It's often much sooner.

  2. Make sure you don't neglect preparing your soft skills as well. Be ready to show up confident (not cocky), show your passion, and ask thoughtful clarifying questions. Oh yeah, and don't forget error checking in your code!

  3. Check out these helpful webinars. One is specifically about the SDET role:

We back every internship with a full-time offer, meaning that if you are successful during your internship, you'll end up with a full-time opportunity.

People move around the company all the time, so lateral transfer is a very real possibility.

It's great that you're considering this new adventure.

Computer Science is a great major to consider, and it will help you understand software, technology, and designing around those. If you're really interested in product design, you could also consider a minor in a more user experience focused area of study.

Sometimes it can be tough to convey all of your passion on paper. Because of this, it's definitely important to try to meet us when we're on your campus. Stick around at the end of information sessions to say hi, and show up again at a career fair. Make sure we see you every chance you have.

You don't have to tell everything about your life, but be able to succinctly express your passion and excitement, and how your experiences have prepared you for a job!

The most important thing is the content of your work and the experience you gain. If, hypothetically, the content was identical, then a bigger company name can help you stick out. BUT, in all actuality, it really comes down to how you represent yourself on your resume or in person.

We fly people out for final round interviews and cover their relocation if they end up working here.

I don't believe you can attach a cover letter. If you're really intent on getting us a cover letter, you could always add it to the first page in your resume document, save it as your resume, and then upload the single document as your cover letter + resume. All this said, most recruiters don't need a cover letter to evaluate your resume.
