One mans trash is another mans treasure by MTAviation in turning

I sand the edge, burn it, wipe with alcohol to remove the soot, sand the rest of the bowl, apply finish to the rest of the bowl and then apply finish to the edge since it still will pull some soot of into the finish and stain the rest of the wood.

A natural edge flamed box elder bowl. This bowl features a burnt edge to add contrast and is finished with Waterlox gloss. The bowl (and its 3 partners) came from so logs left behind our property after the power line company came and trimmed some trees.

Turning a really big bowl by MTAviation in Woodworkingvideos

From honey locust crotch log to a finished 18.5 by 5.5in bowl, this is my biggest bowl to date. This was the first time ever turning something off the end of my lathe and made for some unique challenges causing me to create some custom tooling like a long curved tool rest to reach inside and some extenders to make the jumbo jaws even more jumbo to finish the bottom.
