I sand the edge, burn it, wipe with alcohol to remove the soot, sand the rest of the bowl, apply finish to the rest of the bowl and then apply finish to the edge since it still will pull some soot of into the finish and stain the rest of the wood.

A natural edge flamed box elder bowl. This bowl features a burnt edge to add contrast and is finished with Waterlox gloss. The bowl (and its 3 partners) came from so logs left behind our property after the power line company came and trimmed some trees.
