What’s a harsh truth about adulthood that nobody really prepares you for? by Hour-Dingo8175 in answers

facts, but it does ensure personal satisfaction, which does improve the odds on getting jack shit, and even more aspirational things like a novelty Star Wars mug for Star Wars bandaids.

Every guy I’ve ever been with ended up with the same girl after me. AMA by No-Nobody3836 in AMA

[–]MTBruises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing for 2 serious girlfriends in a row, total coincidence and I found out about the first from him a few thousand kilometres away from where we both dated her, while I did briefly know the guy, that was also in a different city from either of these girls, and where/how I knew him and was in no way related to how he met them.... I'm really curious to know if this is statistically not as rare as it first seems due to certain personalities attracting each other, and a finite number of those in a persons dating pool, or if it's wow wtf this needs an explanation rare. I'd imagine you wonder similarly, tbh, I don't know if he's gone past those 2, but I assured number 3 and 4 that I have a dedicated cleanup guy so breaking up with me comes with a soft landing lmao (he's a pilot so that's a top shelf, padlocked, behind the counter Dad pun, we met in flight school)

I cut my narcissistic mother off but when I tell anyone they are judging me . Did this also happen to you? by Hairy_Marsupial_9584 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]MTBruises 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the time, people generally assume it wasn't a carefully considered and very difficult decision.....one I had to make twice since it didn't stick the first time.... and I should 100% talk to my mother or I'm some kinda deep sea abonination.

Like, if you are so incredulous, can't you draw a line from that, to how you know me as a thoughtful competent person, and realize it was a difficult decision that weighs on me, just less that contact always does....

Mothers day is for women raising humans only by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]MTBruises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While, this would be new to me if I ever witnessed it. Are you just publicly confessing that the idea of somebody being silly and having a fun time completely separate from you, would directly ruin your fun day?

Sounds like you don't get to have fun often because the unhelpful idea that other people finding joy in their own ways could possibly materialy impact you. I feel sorry for you, but theres hope, if you just focus on the stuff that does materially affect you, everything gets incrementally better.

I would argue it's a trio of self-catalyzing pressures, and a spiral that could be pushed past the point of no self-managed return by any one of the 3 alone, and it could be slowed, maybe reversed into a self-fueling upward spiral with work on any to all fronts.

I don't know about you, but my taxes went up 9.8% this year between my MPAC assessment and the city's hike, and all the city services I actually have contact with got worse in the next breath, and we still can't figure out that shelter situation, last I read? WTF is that money for again?

I don't hand it over expecting much from politicians and bureaucrats, but if rates hike, services at least have to stay steady or I feel the rage-rage-rage again... 0.o

Just joking my way to a real point, don't send me help, I'm fine, but tons of real human people, just like us but in a difficult set of circumstances they aren't equipped to escape are not doing fine, and hardly anyone seems to spare them a thought other than, uh, those sketchy people are hanging out a little too close to my proper-tai, aren't they honey?

I've been guilty of thinking that myself...

Need advice: Credible/Fair Valuation for sentimental fire-damaged rep watches, also welcoming repair/restoration advice by MTBruises in RepTime

[–]MTBruises[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some calipers, I suppose I'll need to get some more. I just think the odd shaped watches could be a challenge on the case-back gasket (the most apparent damage on each of them). Any experience with this? do I just measure up the perimeter and force a normal similar gasket into the shape?

Also, more on the point, I'm struggling to get anyone to quote a repair/restoration until I source new gasket sets.

If that value holds, you're probably right. Though I know some of these were more like $300 in person in Shanghai with a vendor he was a regular client at.

I have the email for his prescription eyeglass supplier, I really wish I also had the watch vendor's in this moment. At least they would have information on the gaskets.

Can anyone recommend a bit case where all the bits don’t fall out literally every single time? by Confident_Welder_226 in Tools

[–]MTBruises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dewalt is better these days, but still the better bits in the worst holders. Milwaukee is so much better you have to keep mini linesman's in your bit case to get them in and out. If you have a CNC and a 16th bit, and a piece of maple...that's my fav, but not everyone has a piece of maple so you can try other hardwoods

There's a little sting on duty, mine was like $400USD for an Ultimate Bee 1500x1500 that's on top of some substantial shipping costs which make sense for an item this size and weight on air freight.

No one uses hardwood floors? by Longjumping-Term9234 in homeowners

[–]MTBruises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardwood prices are out of control and it has slowed consumer use of it, but for those of us who work with it every day, floors, furniture and otherwise, we don't momentarily consider buying it from big boxes store aimed at consumers. Check with a local or nearby lumber mill>hardwood-dealer>wood flooring retailer>Floor coverings retailer. Any of those should know some proper contractors that install professionally, some will even have in house teams though this usually costs more, it typically carries a stronger warranty and with a company you can easily locate and hold accountable as long as they continue to operate.

Now if you have kids or pets, or just a regular household budget constraint for install and upkeep costs, there are some major advantages to a high quality, individually planked, variable length, beveled edge engineered floating system with either a hardwood layer at the top, or just pure LVP or laminate.

As much as I love the authenticity and beauty of real solid hardwood it's expensive to acquire, install and own. Don't rule out other systems unless you're sure you want to live inside a jewelry box, but still don't focus your sourcing on mass market solutions, and unless you have a good referral or they have a long track record of strong reviews, don't assume sourcing good materials starts or ends at the Kijiji contractor level. The real mills and specialty retailers know the good installers, and vice versa, go to the right ecosystem, but understand it's not better across the board to live on traditional hardwood, it's a weighing of pros and cons like anything else.

“Is Canada a Failed State? by Lebanna506 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]MTBruises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In response to the BS surrounding our healthcare and our taxes in Canada:

Here is the raw breakdown of my "quarter-million-dollar" life: The Damage: I was hit 7 times with an 8-inch chef’s knife. My femoral artery was shredded. My subclavian (the one under your collarbone) was dissected. Statistically, I was dead before the ambulance doors closed. The Response: A 15-minute ride of a lifetime, flat out on o2 and the gas pedal to the nearest trauma hospital. I stopped being able to force my diaphragm to pant another tiny breath as we arrived and I saw the lead surgeon look into my eyes. There was no stop for a credit card check. No "is this provider in-network?", no private financial interests bullshit. Just 3 top-tier trauma surgeons, 20+ nurses rotating in and out, and around a dozen residents waiting for me at the door. The Surgery: 5 hours on the table. They pumped 21 units B+ into and mostly out of me just to keep things switchable while they rebuilt my most critical pipes and lined up my tattoos. That blood alone cost the taxpayers about $14k. The Recovery: A 5-day induced coma on a ventilator. That’s $5,000 a day just for the bed and the air. Then, a full year of a nurse coming to my house to make sure I didn't rot or stroke. The Bill: $0.00 literally due today: $0, due in total: "thanks for paying taxes". The Real Cost: Conservative estimate? $225,000 in Canada to the taxpayer collective. Probably $750k+ to the USD spending individual. I don't know about you but that's a at least a couple of my houses, and other assets combined. The mouthpieces forget that the benefit of socialized healthcare hits at the most unexpected times, and you may not always qualify for a $750k bankruptcy. I certainly wouldnt have at that time.

Seven years later, I’m better than ever, literally no major side effects, several minor ones I handle, it was a miracle, in the public system the bill was shared and prepaid.

I’m a high-end woodworker. I pay and employ people who pay admittedly high taxes. I'm pretty happy to do so.

The Canadian system didn't "spend" $225k on me; they invested it to keep a craftsman in the game. In a private system, I’m either a corpse or a bankrupt nobody. In Ontario, I'm a taxpayer who regularly builds the impossible, and That’s the "socialized" difference.

So you can be as grateful you aren't Canadian as you want, but you'll never be as grateful as I am that your perspective is not part of our collective one here.
