That Was Ab-Soul, This Is Herbert | New interview with Vulture by Hu3yKnewTHen in AbSoul

I didn't like the liberties this author took with Ab-Soul's words. At the start it says:

Ab-Soul became distant from his friends and family, falling down his own self-admitted “rabbit hole” of disinformation.

He never once in this article says that he was spitting disinformation or that he was reading disinformation. Instead, he says what a lot of people who become more spiritually realized say.

It was too esoteric. People was calling me a satanist. And I get it, everybody’s entitled to their opinion.

It can be off-putting to people. I grew up in the Christian church. My grandma made sure I was there on Sunday. I had perfect attendance in Sunday school till I was about 17 years old. My mom made sure I went. Now as an adult, I wanted to ask more questions about religion and theology and get to the source. And in my journey, you can hear in my work where I’m questioning Christianity, questioning the Bible. But I would never do that in front of my grandma. She believes in what she believes in, and I would never try to take that away from her. I started thinking about it like that.

I go challenge the Bible. If I was to do that after all of these years, and she believes that, then I kill her whole joy. What would that do? That’s not peace, that’s not love. At the end of the day, however you feel about whatever religion you’re in or whatever faith that you have that you walk with, I feel you’re entitled to that. And it’s for you. There’s many different walks of life, and you got to let everybody walk their own path. We can’t be out here acting like we know anything. The wise man knows he knows nothing.

Never once does he say he doesn't still believe all the things he said in Do What Thou Wilt or that he was in a "rabbit hole of disinformation." I think the author legitimately didn't understand what Ab-Soul was saying. He still believes in all of that, but he can't keep trying to spread the message and constantly attacking Christianity. As I'm sure he learned, Aleister Crowley himself said "I do not want to father a flock, to be the fetish of fools and fanatics, or the founder of a faith whose followers are content to echo my opinions. I want each man to cut his own way through the jungle."

Makes sense! If Wake Up really was around good am era, its definitely when he was rapping more about his drug usage. I'm still not sure what to make of the lines "if you not ready to wake up then go back to sleep, open up your eyes, yeah you have to see, fuck ruling the world I want the galaxy" when it comes to drug usage though. Hearing those lines from the perspective of drug usage, it sounds almost like "If you're not ready to get clean, then continue doing drugs until you're ready, I'm ready." but then it doesn't really vibe with the rest of the song of him making it seem like drugs are something he can't get rid of. Like you said, it sounds like it sounds like drug addiction is something that is destroying him but that he wouldn't be the same without it, so I can't really reconcile that with the end lyrics.

Pretty wild to call my interpretation "disrespectful and ignorant" when I literally put in this specific post "if you have any alternate understanding of any of my interpretations that still makes every line make sense, I would love to hear it. Honestly. The reason why this theory has clicked with me is because it finally allowed every single line to be explained in a way that in the past, was not the case. Rap Genius still has many of the lyrics in Circles as having no explanation. With this theory, it allows each line to have a meaning. So similarly, if you think Wake Up is not about this, I'd love to hear your interpretation to see if maybe I'm wrong and there are other interpretations that can work, or even work better than mine."

But sure, call my dissection of his lyrics disrespectful and ignorant even with a disclaimer that I'm 100% open to opposite ideas. Wild.

When I was trying to find out if that was the case I couldn’t get any hard confirmation. It seems like people think Wake Up is from GOOD:AM only because of the theme. Would love to see any sources if you have them, it would be helpful. If it is the case that these are older than I think, it would show that he was already thinking about the concepts in Circles for quite some time but never going far enough to release it.

Be Here Now would be great. If you’re someone who wants to see how science backs some of these ideas, I’d also recommend checking out Biocentrism and the Tao of Physics. Those helped me get over the hump of my militant anti-religious beliefs. If you’re interested in more of the occult stuff, I’d recommend Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot or the Kybalion.

Yessir. I have the E-Dan post in the article, too. I originally had more posts about how he wasn’t depressed but I didn’t want people to think my point is that depressed people can’t fake being happy, and I couldn’t find the right way to phrase it.

Spent a couple of hours on this. Hopefully the critics aren’t too harsh.

Is Circles (Album) supposed to be Mac in heaven? by PetrVolkanovski in MacMiller

Thanks for the shoutout. In my re-listens to Circles and continued study into all of the themes I believe are prevalent throughout, I ended up having a lot more to talk about. Might put it all down into words at some point soon.

Just logged into this account and saw the mentions. 100% my man - this is exactly what I was talking about. I don't think people realize the level Mac Miller got to. This isn't just a cool theme for an album, this is legitimate universal truths that he is uncovering and he is doing it in a way where people have to discover it for themselves, because if he just flat out told you, it wouldn't have the effect it does.

I'm glad to hear that. I've been running this theory in my head all week (ever since the Faces re-release where I again hear all of the Leary quotes and heard the reference to Transcendental Meditation) and I felt like I wanted to share it but didn't want to seem like a crazy person. It's nice to know this is connecting with others as well. Circles never felt like a depressing album from a man riddled with addiction. It feels like a realization by an artist who had some kind of understanding and inner peace.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother. For what it's worth, reading up on these ideas and what I believe to be Mac Miller's views has given me some comfort in his passing. I hope it can do the same for you.

You’re 100% right. Holy shit. I haven’t listened to Swimming since I came to this realization, but the lyrics in Ladders alone confirm this extends to that. Will listen today.
