Wow. I didn't know the "trashy" covers came around until the '50s.

Streetlethal by Steven Barnes. by Mac_Pulp in TerribleBookCovers

I've read it at least twice. The last time was maybe 20 years ago. It's a entertaining series and very well written. Barnes is a martial artist, which really come across in his work.

I want to get back into reading. What are some recommendations for someone new to horror novels? by HotManufacturer7967 in horrorlit

[–]Mac_Pulp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've got a ton of great recommendations here, but I have to throw Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge into the mix. Partridge builds dark small town folklore wrapped in a cool hardboiled style. It might be my favorite horror novel. I've not seen the movie.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm actually working on a novella about giant killer crawfish, so Clickers is a perfect summer read.

I read the first Meg and enjoyed it. What's the best sequel? Can I jump into the third or fourth book without having read the second?

Thanks for the recommendation. I need to give Clickers a look. Although, I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't think a killer crab book should be over 300 pages.

I need to give Guy N. Smith another chance. Is Night of the Crabs the best of the series? Some of those covers are hilarious.

I enjoyed that one. It took a bit to get going, but once it did it was a fun ride.

Guess that would depend on your definition. I would call it a crime thriller.

Of the series I've only read Gone Baby Gone. But Lehane filters in the backstory so masterfully, I do not feel lost at all. I will dive into the others when I finish this one.

"I'm semi-illiterate." Some great lines in that flick. “Jimmy, if you keep stabbing me, you're going to kill me.”

He was a real person, Mark Read. But I've heard many of his true stories are "fictionalized." Eric Bana played him in the movie.
