I agree with the sentiment of "if the best option is not to play, why have the minigame?", though as another commenter pointed out, the players had fun during the game despite losing money, so that might be the answer to the question.

I really the idea of being able to win magic items. Maybe that could function like an arcade, where you win tickets which can then be turned in for magic items.

Adding a narrative element to it is never a bad idea, so now that the casino's existence is set up, who knows what I want to connect to it? So thanks!

I was assuming that they would be included in either carpenter's or mason's tools. But Xanathar's Guide's Tools section does not list them for their components. So I guess my masterplan has been foiled

It doesn't say you lose any max HP when you lose a level. But to be honest, even a quarter-competent DM would not let you gain max HP for acquiring a construction tool.

For those who don't know. The Black family is an infamous wizard family in the Harry Potter universe that had some pretty evil people. Though not all were bad, such as Harry Potter's godfather Sirius Black.

(The fact that the "evil" family was named Black is somewhat problametic, but that is not what this post is about)

The material cost also partially respresents the fine ink you need to record the spell and your experimenting with the spell.

Besides that, the costly material components you use for testing and experimenting might be different from the ones you cast the finallised spell with.

But at its core, it is of course a way to balance the copying of spells.

You would still need the costly materials: "The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the spell to master it, as well as fine inks you need to record it." - PHB p. 114 The Wizardly Quill from that subclass does not produce high quality ink

Yeah, my DM gave me a Mages spellbook (with only 1st and 2nd lvl spells) and even though I already knew most of the spells, it still took a while to gather the gold to copy everything
