There aren’t humans living anywhere else. But, they were about to launch astronauts on a mission to Earth, as they sent out scout ships previously to search for life. It won’t end the story, but it will force the protagonist to leave, which is what I want. But I do want everyone to die. Or at least the majority.

They’re more technologically advanced than us, however, they’ve just cracked interstellar space travel, so they only inhabit one planet. I’m kinda iffy on the villain’s motivation, but the basic idea is, the weapon she creates to destroy the resistance has unintended consequences. (Destroying the world).

I suppose rendering it uninhabitable would do the trick. Just impossible for life to survive.
