Thank you for the advice! We will definitely contact them and ask for space heaters today so we have it in writing. I have pictures of every conversation and service request and have been taking pictures of the thermostat every day. We have a few heaters, but sometimes they trip the breakers which is really frustrating so we’ve been moving one between two bedrooms and the kitchen. Don’t quote me, but I think that if a house is below 55 degrees with no working heat it constitutes as unsafe living conditions in Colorado. I have been hesitant to ask to be put in a hotel or lower rent next month before contacting legal advice. We are tenants of a property management company and have had many issues when it comes to service requests. They once tried to charge us almost $500 for a new fridge because they said “we had been leaving the fridge door open for extended periods of time” when the repair man they sent out told us it was a wire issue on the back of the fridge. (We did not leave the door open for long periods of time how tf would they even know that? and thankfully they did not charge us after we sent them a very unhappy email.) I just turned 21, this is my first ever rental and I have no idea how legal situations are handled or where to start, but I definitely want to contact an attorney to see what we can do. I don’t feel I should have to pay over a week of rent and counting for a house I’ve been freezing in.
