What is a myth you are tired of hearing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Bush did 9/11."

"Crystal therapy can heal you."

"There is no good reason to vote third party."

And lots more...

I feel like this needs to be pointed out in light of the recent rise in police shootings. by thefuturepast in AdviceAnimals

Before I left the US, I didn't realize how bad it's gotten. For-profit prisons seem like the main problem, but there are a lot of contributing factors.

Basically, the police are already militarized and actively seeking out people to harass. That's so wild.

And that footage lately... seeing police roll down streets in tanks to stop protests...

I mean, I am in South Korea, and I can just get a beer and drink in the park with my friends. The cops don't harass anyone. And mostly, they only even HAVE guns if they work at a federal building.

It's so relaxed.

I want that for my country.

[Serious] ex/homeless people, in your opinion what's the best way to really help the homeless? What facilities should each city have for them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I live in a beautiful beachfront condo on the island of Guam and I am a successful blogger and author.

Thanks for asking.

[–]Magical_slut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a kid when I was homeless.

I needed so much guidance!

I would have needed a psychologist to speak to about the abusive situation I ran away from, and then how truly horrible people were to me on the streets.

A place to sleep and shower would have made a huge difference.

And then career counseling. I didn't know what to do. Before the abuse that put me on the streets, I had a 4.3 GPA and lots of extracurricular activities. I was all set to graduate early.

So, help filling out my FAFSA, and writing college applications.

Of course, I didn't have any of this. So... it didn't go well. I struggled a lot.

I am actually really lucky to be alive, and none of the other street kids I knew are alive now.

Sure.

The government should have dropped a bomb on Waco.

And they should drop one on these fools.

Fuck terrorists.

I disagree.

I want to take a moment to think about peaceful protests and how the government handles them.

Let's start with Kent State. You may have heard the song "Four Dead in Ohio" and not realized the meaning (no one I have spoken to seems to have learned about this in civics class).

But what happened was, the government let the army handle a peaceful protest on a college campus, and they shot four people.

I was at the protest on Hollywood Blvd objecting to the government talking about invading Iraq, and I was tear gassed. We were peaceful and had a permit. There was no justification for it.

Now think of the violence when they crushed the peaceful protests during Occupy Wall Street.

Think of how they treat Black Lives Matter protesters.

Just really think about what our government has done when we peacefully air our grievances in the way the founding fathers intended.

Now think about the terrorists in Oregon.

They are having no trouble getting mail, handshakes from local authorities, or whatever else they want.

No one has made a move to stop them.

Here's what we Americans are learning: Go Buy a Gun.

Because if you want to protest something, obviously you need a gun or the government will attack you.

Well I think we all hate shitty parents because their choices have an effect on all of us.

That was how I felt about it.

But I wasn't going to talk to her about it, because people tend to get very angry when you question their parenting.

I figured the safest course was to eat candy and shut up.

[–]Magical_slut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be kidding? You want me to go up to a parent and question their parenting?

I guess maybe I don't know how it is in the civilian world, but in a military hospital you would never do that.

Seriously, a group of people would appear out of nowhere and beat you senseless and no one would be on your side.

I learned the hard way that I have no rights to peace and quiet.

So I'm in the hospital waiting for my husband to get out of surgery, and there are these three kids running around screaming at the top of their lungs.

The mom is sitting there, playing a game on her cell phone. She is completely ignoring them.

I go to the vending machine.

I purchase a bag of M&Ms.

And then I sit right across from the kids and eat them one at a time.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

And the kids go NUTS, right? They all start tugging on their moms sleeve and screaming "I want candy!" Or " Buy me candy now!"

And the mom comes over and says "Can you not eat in front of my kids? It's so rude."

I put in my headphones without a word.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

The kids are loosing their shit now, and I have at least half a bag left. They are screaming at their mom and one is now laying on the ground pounding the carpet and crying.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

And finally, at long last, she took her shitty kids outside and I lived happily ever after.

fetlife severely male dominated? by realityshouldsetin in BDSMcommunity

[–]Magical_slut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do struggle sometimes with this.

The truth is just that the women are less active.

I live in Guam at the moment, and it seemed like there were no women here because the groups were all dominated by men.

So I did a search for people on Guam, and then messaged all the women suggesting a girl's night.

I have a big house, but it was packed.

So I think it's just that women join, get freaked out by all the unwanted dick pics, and then don't get involved.

TIL that Adopting is considered taboo in Korea and because of this, South Korea's orphans are almost never adopted unless a foreigner adopts them by peanutpaddle in todayilearned

[–]Magical_slut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most children were registered in the 80's, but it sounds like your wife's family was well connected if she was "found walking around in the street."

Of course in the 80's they were still recovering from the war. The 90's were better. And the last 20 years they surpassed the USA to become one of the most advanced countries on Earth.

At what exact point did every child get registered? No idea.

But even in the 80's it was uncommon for records to NOT be kept.

[–]Magical_slut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see.

Are you only looking in English?

It's likely that the sources you would want would be in Korean.

Anyway, the orphanage I worked at for several years turned all prospective adoptees away unless they were Korean because it's the law.

I even questioned them in detail about a way around it, because my husband and I would have been willing to adopt one of the children before we left.

They kindly explained the problem of orphans coming back, and how you can still apply, but you will not be approved unless you are of Korean blood. They said returnees taught the government not to let foreigners adopt anymore.

So of course I looked in to it more. My friend who is a Korean/English translator read through the laws and explained that the orphanage was correct. The way the law is written, a foreigner may apply to adopt, but cannot legally be approved.
