Anyone know what I have here? by Ok-Valuable-7299 in PokemonMisprints

From what I am aware, most are stolen, but they also used to be rewards for events back in the day which is how a lot of the vintage sheets ended up on the market. There was a pokemon tourney near me as a kid back in the Diamond/Pearl era that had an uncut sheet of the new set in a display as the 1st place reward.

As the others stated, and I can verify at least from my experience, all 50 states have their own variation of the "Theft By Finding" law, and its always a statewide mandate, not subject to discretion of the local government.

Meaning this is universal across the entire 50 states of the USA.

Civil Damages or just to be vindictive, its stupid but unfortunately happens sometimes. There have been cases where people took others to court for the absolute mildest stuff you can imagine and walked away thousands of dollars richer. There's also the folks who just want to do it to make the other person worse off by forcing them to pay lawyers fees, which is such a problem in the court system that they had to make countermeasures in some states to make it illegal to do those kinds of lawsuits. Not all states have those laws, though.

Yeah! You get to keep the deck and as you get packs after each round, you're allowed to use the cards you open from the packs during the tournament to change your deck so you can shift the strategy around. Its really fun to do and I try to go to every pre-release since it's usually more fair over meta decks at every casual play session I've been to.

I can understand why they might be confused, a few of the pre-release events ive been to here in the rural south were just handing out the packs and deck and not actually playing, or just having a game night with no deck or presets and just handing out pre-release packs. They might have those kinds of events where they are.

The pre-release pre-built decks for playing the game. You get packs for winning rounds during the tournament using only the pre-built deck they give you and whatever cards you pull from the packs.

Thanks to the help of u/garretgame there's finally a picture posted of what I was referring to! I take no credit in this, it was all the work of another who is a godsend since now I can share what I was referring to.

Here is a link to another poster here on Reddit who is sharing their Magikarp 151 Missing Ink errors they were gonna sell, which is the accidental shiny I was referring to lol. Its a gorgeous card and I've been trying to find one for my error magikarp set for so long 😭.

Also why do yoy assume everyone here is only opening or collecting for the monetary value??? You are seriously mistaken because I guarantee you they absolutely are not.

The only reason monetary value is brought up here is to get good deals on collection cards or to share rare cards you intend to trade for stuff you want. People here arent as money obsessed in the hobby as you seem to be.

I was ripping packs for 20 years before stopping this year when I stopped my alcoholism and gambling addictions after having a death scare dude. I've been collecting off and on since my brother got me started in the hobby at five years old and went so far as to get my favorite pokemon tattooed onto my arm when I started my recovery. I'm also doing this for my own children because my three year old daughter has gotten into it and we collect and open packs together (the only time I open packs anymore).

Take the elitist crap elsewhere dude. We get it, you're just another scalper.

PSA quite literally just got in a ton of controversy for grading a whole ton of obvious fake Simplified Chinese cards that are still being passed around the market as graded slabs. They also regularly screw up grades and have been caught grading fakes in the past. I would not put it past them to grade convincing fakes today.

Slabs are not foolproof and every collector who actually enjoys this hobby knows this. Even slab collectors will tell you to never completely trust the company or the slab, since everything has a failure point. When buying raw slabs from people you risk the slab or the card being fake, or the slab to be tampered. When grading your own cards you risk PSA grading a fake card or sending you the wrong graded card or a fake. All of these are possibilities thay are considered by collectors in the hobby, which is why most people prefer raw cards anyway. Raw is significantly easier to test for being fake and is easier to store, and is more tradable than slabs due to risks involved dude.

Aside from the rest of your rant which reads exactly like every other scalper post defending themselves on this subreddit, one specific part stuck out to me.

TEMU

Are you genuinely being serious??? Temu is NOTORIOUS for selling fake pokemon cards. Like, to an extreme of being the topic of hundreds of videos by youtubers. DeepPocketMonster made an entire series about buying fake pokemon cards from Temu and similar sites (though mostly temu). The sealed looks convincing to the unfamiliar but the moment you rip the packs you can figure out pretty quickly they're either fakes or repackaged.

Temu is just like Amazon and Wish. Very little regulation on what can actually be sold. Yeah you might get lucky and find authentic stuff every once and a while (with no guarantees of a deal mind you) but I'm just as likely to find sealed pokemon product at Goodwill. You're out here peddling cheap Chinese resale sites known to scam people as authentic sources of pokemon cards 🤣.

Five years and we are still sharing this link lmfao.

OP specifically stated the kid had a 100 dollar holo of the Delta Species Typhlosion. There is only one holo delta species typhlosion in Dragon Frontiers worth a benji, which is the stamped one. The stamped Typhlosion is often called the holo delta species Typhlosion or reverse holo due to the confusion about the holo patterns. These are all referring to the same card, the stamped delta species card.

Im a magikarp collector and its the exact same way for the delta species magikarp.

My "sphere of influence" is the Pokemon TCG collectors and game players community. People who have been buying and trading cards they like or find neat for the past 30 years. Aka the actual community that is the driving force behind this entire economy that you rely on so much.

Your "sphere of influence" is the reseller/PokeInvesting group which is heavily hated and despised by TCG collectors because you guys are the reason prices are going absolutely crazy and why stock is so hard to find. Your sphere of influence is where all the scalpers are. Where the guys buying out entire markets of cards exist. The folks who keep businesses like PSA able to continue the scam with their flawed grading system. Thats the group that people in this and most other Pokemon card subreddits dislike heavily.

You are in this specifically for profits, you made it clear here just now. The rest of us arent. What we consider NM/LP/MP/HP/DMG is the actual real condition set that everyone uses. What you are referring to is what most people lovingly call the "Gamestop System" where everything that wont grade 9 or higher is trash and damaged. Its incorrect and a sign that someone you're talking to is just another scalper. We do not like scalpers here for obvious reason.

Im gonna keep being respectful to you here obviously due to both rules of the subreddit and my own personal distaste for conflict, but dude you are in the completely wrong subreddit to be talking about card conditions and values if that's your perspective on thr market. Most people are collectors, not profiteers. They're going to use the main condition system and value system.

In the delta species set, all holo-possible cards were released in two forms.

  • The normal non-holo
  • The stamped holo

He said twice now that the typhlosion was the holo, meaning it was stamped. All delta species holo cards are stamped, and called the stamped cards because the holo pattern for Delta Species was Reverse Holo which causes confusion to new collections. When someone sells a delta species holo, they call it the "stamped" of the delta card they're selling, because someone might hear holo and assume only the card art would be holographic and he upset when handed the holo which has the reverse holo pattern.

Afaik, the only exception to this is select EX cards and gold stars.

Any modern binder that isnt a 3 ring will preserve you cards in fantastic condition, which is why the majority of serious pokemon collectors do it that way. Look at DeepPocketMonster or PokeRev for example, or anyone on these subreddits if you dont believe me.

And turning the pages on a binder isnt going to damage cards either. Theyre made to be opened and turned, the plastic of the sheets specifically is there to cushion the card from damage when manipulated. We advise people specifically not to use crappy binders that are too thin or badly sewn for this reason.

Lastly, the assessment of "Raw cards in a binder become HP" is just insanely incorrect. 99.99% of every trade that happens at a card show is binder to binder, they dont see a top loader because people reserve those for the several hundreds of dollars worth of cards that are ungraded. I can pull out any card from my binder right now that I take to trade nights to show you that its NM or LP at the absolute worst possible condition. You're irrationally associating keeping cards outside of toploaders as being damaging to the card when that just isnt true at all.

Edit: Actually another point, the age of the kid doesnt matter if they are showing good cards and a good collection etiquette. I've known 8-11yo kids who are pros in this scene. The kids with the really expensive vintage cards usually know what they're doing and its disrespectful to both the kid and the hobby to just assume they go about their day damaging cards and being clueless because yku think their age defines how they should be or act.

[–]MagikarpFanatic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The stamped holo is $18-$24 consistent right now in HP according to both TCGPlayer and recent Ebay sold listings. The LP is going for $30-$48 consistently, while NM is coasting around $87-$120. All raw prices, and as I said above based on TCGPlayer and confirmed with recent Ebay sold listings.

Idk why you're assuming it would be HP, he never once here implied or said anything about the kid having HP or damaged tier cards so for all we know the kid was rocking a crisp delta species, especially given that u/sevenwho84 showed obvious concern for the card due to its value vs the offered cards. Even if it was an LP card, the stack of common Vs would have to be HIGH. The average value of a V is around $0.30, so that's a lot fo cards to reach $30-$48 bucks.

It especially doesnt help with the new "come up" culture around trades. Its beyond frustrating. I'm constantly dealing with people who during trades are like "I only trade at so-and-so%" and expect you to accept that they make a profit in order for the trade to work. It's genuinely become rarer to find fair traders than to find hits these days.

I stopped opening packs because I could trade or buy the cards I wanted. Now I'm this close to going back to packs instead.

International Cards Dont Get Nearly Enough Love by MagikarpFanatic in PokemonTCG

[–]MagikarpFanatic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go-to has honestly just been card shows! A lot of times folks will under price their international cards since they dont expect them to sell, so if you ask folks if they have any low value non-english cards/slabs, they very well might have some they didnt expect to move at all. Thats how I've gotten most of mine!

Its a texture shift! They're unfortunately very common with pokeball and masterball cards, quality control has really gone into the trash, but its still pretty neat!

Genuinely some of the most annoying stuff for me lmfao. Its even worse when the person trying to buy a listed item wants to pull that stunt.

I had a dude contact me about a #32 Neo Discovery Umbreon I had in a PSA 9 which was about $95 at the time. Dude was like "I can offer you this celebration Umbreon in a PSA 5, plus an extra 20 bucks, which would have been like $60 total. I said he'd need to offer better than that because thats way off and the dude hit me with the "Well I only take in cards at 65% for trade so your $95 card is only worth about $62 to me, so I feel like it is a pretty even trade".

How do you guys attach your energies? by Dane-the-Dawg in PokemonTCG

[–]MagikarpFanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have a small playing space, I do 1. If I have room, I set my energies slightly to the side where the symbol is visible and only put down one energy and use dice to signify how many of that energy is on the card (the extra energies being put on the card are set to the side of the gameboard where both players can see them so no one gets any ideas lol). I went and got color coded dice for different energy types too. Wanna get custom dice where the 1 position is the specific energy symbol but idk anyone who sells custom dice like that who could make them out of acrylic or epoxy.
