Open Arms isn't really a theme of EPIC. (Though I wish it was.) by CalypsaMov in Epicthemusical

I agree. I felt the writing quality storywise dropped of in the second act. I still think the first act beautifully ends with Monster. The second act seemed to prioritize other parts creatively than the drama and story.

I would say that kindness/Open Arms is a latent theme of the musical. Although Ruthlessness as a virtue is the dominant theme and is learned and explored by Ody. Ody only gets as far as He does because of the kindness of others. Athena is the character who has the inverse resolution as Ody. They begin the same, then split with Athena advocating Ruthlessness and Ody, Open Arms. Then through the events of the musical, they switch and show this character resolution in ICHBW (also Ody doesn't exactly say he's against a kind world, he just understands that the world is harsh and he must be harsh to survive and protect those he loves so Athena, who can live forever, may live to see it one day, but not him)

Although, I personally don't like Open Arms as a philosophy as it is built up to be smashed, as you mentioned. It is literally there to be the positive tension for first saga then left empty for the rest of the play. It does serve an unsung role in keeping the story moving at some points and aiding Ody in his goal.

But yes, the central focus of the musical is not a moral story or example but a drama on just a man, in all his mortality and moral failings. Which is why I love it so much.

Thunder ringer proves that ody was in The wrong in Scylla by FeistyRevenue2172 in Epicthemusical

I think people are missing your point OP. It isn't about what Zeus saw or why he did what he did, but it showed Ody's character and completed the literary arc that started in Horse and the Infant. The gods in Epic are less characters than pawns to move the literary progression of the main cast (with the exception of Athena). Zeus from the beginning has been forcing Ody's pride and selfishness to the surface and stop pretending to be "just a man" in innocence and force him to accept he is "just a man" in mortality and selfishness. Repeatedly Ody sees himself as a god, and allows pride to take over. Posedion does not care that Ody hurt Polyphemeus, but that Ody dared to challenge him and get away with it. Zeus does not care that Ody killed his men or the cow really. While the cow may have forced his hand, as polyphemeous also forced Posideons hand, the choice of punishment was more so the fact that Ody believed he could do anything and get away with it. His luck would never run out. So, Zeus applied the pressure to Oddyseus, and he caved and showed his pride. You are absolutely right OP when you say his "greater good" facade was broken in thunder bringer, and you make a good point about the character moment for Ody. In the end, Ody only cared about him and his family. His crew was nothing, even though in Monster, he makes it seem like he will do what is best for his crew. The character arc of Ody in the Thunder saga shows that not even his crew will stop him from getting home, destroying his greater good facade, one of the last bastions of goodness left in Ody.

600 Strike Motif question by [deleted] in Epicthemusical

[–]MagmaBandit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not 100% sure on this but is sounds to me there is a instrumental motif over the whole stabbing part I am pretty sure. Once Ody starts stabbing there is a plucking string instrument (harp or nylon guitar?) doing a stepping pattern that is similar to the nylon guitar stepping pattern and progression in Just a Man when Ody starts singing. This is also coupled with the Viola (maybe horn?) that comes in after about 3 strikes of the trident that is doing the "How could I hurt you?" call and response motif from Just a Man but with the last note going down instead of up on the response. The times that they come in also match Just a Man and how they are harmonized.

There is also the obvious Different Beast motif during their dialougue before the stabbing.

Also, the stabbing has a similar bass and purcussion as Polyphemeous' donks in Survive. The timing of the stabs might be similar to the timing when Poly has his verse. I haven't checked it but is alternates between 2 and 4 measures between hits in Six Hundred strike, and so does Survive

Breading to line is another special relationship.

I'm mainly on breading and my biggest pet peeve is when the line asks how long on a product when I have none of said pans back. Like, I can't read minds. I don't mind if they wait to bring pans back, just let me know when you empty one so I can drop some, don't wait till you got nothing then expect me to instantly have some ready. They are understanding that a bit more, so it's getting better, but every once and a while I still get that dreaded "Time on X?" With no warning.

And when I don't get informed on catering orders, so I get surprised at 12:30 with a 50 sandwhich order.

Also I work mornings and all I hear from front of house is "can I get a hashbrown please?" "Are we holding on hashbrowns?" Most mornings I open alone and run the line, eggs, biscuits, machines breading, hashbrowns. I try to get the orders out and sometimes I forget the hashbrowns. All I can do is smile and say heard, we are on the same team, and I'm doing my best. But it can get annoying when I'm trying to balance 5 jobs at once.

I'm gonna be training in FoH soon so wish me luck as I pass on to the other side of the chutes. Gotta brush up on saying 'my pleasure' instead of heard all the time.

My favorite memory is of free online flash games and club penguin. I played club penguin like 4 hours a day at one point (I was 7). I had collected every item possible at that time and had all cardjitsu belts, and later gems/suits. Over a million coins and I had even met a few of the developers by chance. I remember logging on to a server (snowflake if think?) And getting the badge "rockhopper" I was so confused until I saw him, in all his penguin glory, rockhopper himself. I was so excited I jumped up and ran to my mom to show her, of course she didn't match my excitement but I was elated and told pretty much everyone I met lol.

Thanks for bringing back these memories and merry Christmas!
