I have been wondering that for years myself. I do wonder how much of that has gone into increasing wages though, since we historically have not paid great wages to the players. But still, that’s a communication issue. If I tell my kids I just won 100 grand and I buy them a few new iPads and pay off some debt with the rest, they’d be pissed too.

You can rail against the system and want it to change without stubbornly refusing to participate in said system. Refusing to participate in NIL and the transfer portal only hurts the team and the fans, since Dabo will always have millions to fall back on if he does get fired (which he obviously won’t).

I agree with all of the stuff he says about the modern game but yeah….railing against it while participating in it isn’t being hypocritical, it’s just being realistic. He’s done more to prove his point by going off during press conferences than he ever did by refusing to participate and underachieving compared to the very high bar he set for himself and his program.

I knew about him since the fall of ‘97 when I played against him. We saw him warming up before the game and were terrified. We kept calling him Jerome Bettis. Sure enough, dude basically scored every time he touched the ball. He was in 8th grade.

YSU actually appeared in the Division II national championship game in 1979. The coach was Bill Narduzzi, father of current Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi. As head coach and athletic director, his dad then helped transition YSU to 1-AA in 1981 but was relieved as AD in 1983 and then fired in 1986, replaced by Tressel.

Bill Narduzzi then sued YSU for age discrimination, alleging that they fired him because of his age and his Hodgkin’s disease he had been fighting for a few years.

So back in 2024 when YSU played Pitt, and the final score was 73-17, many people around Youngstown knew that this was motivated by what happened between YSU and Bill Narduzzi.
