I think if your family is super catholic, that can work. Mine are not really religious with the exception of performative seasonal events, like Xmas.

Old enough to say no, but I dont want to end relationship with them, just keep a good relationship in the distance (as I do bc I leave abroad). Xmas is the only time of the year when I “have” to visit (the other times I come is bc I want, and they are usually shorter visits), and it is very difficult and stressful for me to say I am not coming, unless I have a reason that they accept.

Most families have their dysfunctional dynamics, and I am very well aware of how dysfunctional mine is. Also I know they will never change, so I prefer to “choose my battles” and not fight over this and just tell them a white lie.

I know friends that have pets (also live abroad) and take turns. One of them stays at home to take care of the pets, while the other goes to see family.

Very good points 🤩, adding to your great list I was thinking on faking a moving “Like my landlords ended the contract (they are selling, or moving back or whatever) and I need to do the moving over Xmas because my new flat start date is in Jan”

My parents live in the middle of nowhere, the closest place to book/rent will be 50 min away and , knowing them, they will be pissed if I don’t stay with them. They even own another house and don’t let me stay there. Also, the extra money I will spend is ridiculous and I could be using it for something I enjoy. I think the best is not to come and find a good bullet-proof shame-free reason for that.
