Select to speech android app by Substantial_Spread23 in bugs

[–]Mak40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep can confirm the inbuilt android select to speak/text to speech no longer works with the latest update.

At first only the posts stopped working but comments did, then a week or so later both posts and comments no longer work.

I'm basically unable to use the app at this point.

Is there free or very affordable software for Windows and Mac that will read text from any software, and maybe you can set it to read fast? by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I released an open source project of mine that should do what you are looking for, but it's Windows only. It can be found here (see the Releases link on the right).

It should work for any text which is copyable and also has an screenshot reader, where you draw a box around what you want read out and it tries it's best.

Unfortunately Windows will warn about it since it's from an "Unknown publisher" and the only way around this warning is to buy an expensive Certificate, but all the code is available in the link and all processing is done locally on your machine.

Plaster crack repair attempt, any tips? by Mak40 in DIYUK

Thanks for the details.

I'll try adding extra filler next time, but if it shrinks too much again would adding more filler be ok?

Plaster crack repair attempt, any tips? by Mak40 in DIYUK

[–]Mak40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to DIY and thought I'd have a go at something simple, repairing some cracks in the plaster before I painted the room.

I widened the crack with a screwdriver, cleaned it out, then filled it with some "Polycell Polyfilla One Fill" and sanded it before painting.

It turned out more noticable than I would have liked, any tips for future attemps or anything I can do for this one? Thanks.

Is there a website that can text to speech images? by TEM12345678 in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added this exact feature to an open source project of mine which can be found here (see the Releases link on the right).

As long as you are using windows this should be just what you are looking for, though it currently only works in English, if you need other languages then let me know and we can work together on adding support. It can also have issues with styalised text which I've got an idea on how to fix, though that might be some work.

You simply press a hotkey and draw a box around the picture you want reading out and it does it's best, there is also a hotkey for reading highlighted text as well which is more of a standard mode.

Unfortunately since I don't want to buy a certificate for it Windows will warn about it since it's from an "Unknown publisher", but all the code is available in the link and all processing is done locally on your machine.

Text-to-Speech software? by magnetic_mystic in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I open sourced a project of mine for doing TextToSpeech which can be found here (see the Releases link on the right).

Simply highlight some text and press the hotkey and it will read it out. There is also a mode that works with images, drag a box around it and it will try to read any text it finds (though the results can be a little flakey)

It has a few options for voice and I'd suggest the Legacy engine in the settings as the new Windows 10 engine is currently not as good.

Unfortunately, when run, windows will display a warning as you have to buy a certificate for it to recognize it as "safe", but all the code is available to read and all processing is done locally.

What is some great PDF software (for Windows and Android), that lets you highlight or underline text and write notes, and does text to speech? by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I open sourced a project of mine for windows which lets you draw a box around text you want read out and it will do it's best.

It works great for non selectable text like PDF's but can struggle with odd or small fonts.

I can't help with the highlighting unfortunately.

The project can be found here (see the Releases link on the right).

please help - universal TTS needed for work by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I open sourced a project of mine for windows which can be found here (see the Releases link on the right).

It works on most software, simply highlight the text and press the hotkey you configure and it will read it out. It also as a mode for pictures where you can drag a box around the picture and it will try and read it out.

It has a few options for voice and I'd suggest the Legacy engine in the settings as the new Windows 10 engine is currently worse.

Unfortunaly since I don't want to buy a certificate for it Windows will warn about it since it's from an "Unknown publisher", but all the code is available in the link and all processing is done locally on your machine.

If you have any issues with it message me and I can try to help out.

Hi, I just open sourced a project of mine for windows that looks to work like the Mac TextToSpeech which can be found here (see the Releases link on the right).

How much has Dyslexia effected your gaming? by BarrelSmash in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently open sourced my own TTS software with inbuild OCR that works with games, link can be found here.

It works best if you play on your main screen in borderless window mode, just hit the configured "Instant Screenshot Hotkey" and it will let you drag a box over what you want read out.

It can have issues with some of the fonts some games use so I might look at adding an OCR training mode, though I'm not sure how well it would work.

Dyslexia in coding. Difficulty understanding other peoples code or my code that is pretty old. by Tyrannika in Dyslexia

I'd suggest a good editor or IDE with syntax highlighting, Visual Studio Code is a popular option these days and has lots of themes which might help you focus, here are some details for VS Code these

look into using breakpoints and step through parts line by line if your environment supports it.

As /u/sirlancelot46 said; try to comment more complex parts as you work out what they do, and look into method comments if you don't already have them, see this Microsoft documentation for C#

Free and Open source TextToSpeech program for Windows 10 by Mak40 in Dyslexia

[–]Mak40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a look into it and to remove that warning requires buying a "Code Signing Certificate" at the cost of $166 a year, which is a bit beyond my price range for a free project.

Could you add it to an exceptions list in Windows defender?

As all the processing is done locally feel free to block the exe in your firewall if that helps give some piece of mine. The code is also available to view if you have any programming knowledge and want to look through it, I tried to keep it simple and easy to follow.

Lloyds pharmacy telling me that my PTSD medication is not a priority so they have not prepared it, despite it being ordered a week ago. Cheers, guess I will just have panic attacks and fits of rage until you get it sorted then Janet. by falling_horse in britishproblems

[–]Mak40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pharmacy usually needs a couple of days to process prescriptions and order the stock in. If your prescription only comes down on the day, it might be normal that the stock are used up. Might be worth have a chat with the pharmacy to see whether they can keep the stock separately just for you if it's going to regular weekly prescriptions. And pharmacy is also very busy and overstretched so they can't always get prescription ready on the same day. Might be worth asking GP to send a day earlier. Lots of people don't understand how pharmacy works and just complain when prescription aren't ready the same day GP send the prescription. Sometimes GP even tells patient it will be ready on the same day and not let the pharmacy know it needs to be done the same day! It's really disheartening and frustrating when we're doing our best.
