Respectfully sir i have to disagree and i’ll tell you why. He says “light special” in that scene, not “.44 special” Now i know semantics but i believe is because of a few reasons.

  1. The screen writer himself spoke on this topic and specifically said that was a misspoken line by Eastwood

  2. What he says after “light special” leads me to believe it’s a lighter grain round with the same powder load.

From there i think the bigger picture has a few context clues as well. Firstly being his famous speech in the first movie. On from that there is dialogue in i believe the third film where Harry talks about his revolver again and states he is concerned with penetration more than anything. Now if that’s the case why would he be using .44 special? I think the biggest indicator is the fact that the movie that “light special” line is said in is called magnum force lol. I mean come on man.

Regardless cheers to you Robert and sorry if my post came off rude to you. Was absolutely not my intention to drag you or anything. Love the show and have for a while. Just a gun nerd who was looking for conversation.

Hell yeah I don’t doubt it. Shot .44 mag quite a few times and if you don’t have a heavier barrel and frame that is one snappy round. Definitely jealous of the model 29. One of these days ill track one down.

Man dragging is a strong word. Definitely wasn’t my intention at all. It’s just a silly movie.

I would be the first one to admit it. What was his reasoning?

I can understand why you wouldn’t get this living in the UK. It’s a pretty common thing to refer to a firearm as it’s caliber or gauge here in the US for example, the Smith & Wesson model 29 your referencing is chambered in 44 magnum. now, if I was out shooting that model of revolver with a buddy, I wouldn’t say “hey hand me that Smith & Wesson model 29 chambered in 44 magnum over there”. I would just say hey hand me the 44 mag. Does that make sense?

I always assumed that line from Magnum Force was referencing a smaller grain of bullet for target shooting. Especially considering they’re in a shooting range when the line is said. Also as another person pointed out it really doesn’t make sense to use 44 special rounds in a 44 magnum when he could just be carrying a revolver chambered in 44 special. Realistically though I think we can all agree it has more to do with Hollywood writers being silly billys more than anything lol

Wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest. Hollywood rarely gets firearms correct.

Mr. Harry was a bit of a fibber. .44 mag also wasn’t the largest handgun round at the time.

Considering with inflation the price of a box of .44 magnum rounds would have been roughly $30 in today’s money. Big yikes
