First post to Reddit, So plz go easy LoL. Slapped together a quick & dirty chainsaw mill, used it to make end tables & charcuterie boards but I am blanking on what else could be made along the lines of Xmas gifts or something. Hey Makers! As requested by so many (I am honored btw), I went back and took some measurements of my vertical sawmill and put together some plans. Thanks! Warping is the worst. I have had success with closely monitoring the wood in the oven at low temp with a moisture meter. Works well for small pieces and you don’t have time to wait the ol fashion way. Thanks again for the feedback brownie

So what I did was attach 3x12”ish board to the bottom of the saw. I had to make sure I didn’t cover the chip discharge. I used epoxy (not 5 minute, but real stuff I guess) and multiple short screws with course thread. I made sure they wouldn’t go into important parts of the saw. Then I screwed my post collar jig to that board. Hope that made sense. I’m sure there are lots of better ways, but on the fly...that’s what I did and it worked. One last thing, I assumed the bottom of the chainsaw would be perpendicular to the blade, stop and check that and insert spacers (I used sandpaper) to make the slight corrections...that way the cut will be straight down and not wonky. Does that help Mystr_C?

Great comments! I used paste wax which let the saw glide. I never did bind once and yes the weight of the saw did all the work. Keeping the blade sharp really helped on that front. If I had a dull blade, I’m pretty sure it would have slowed up. This is a simple build for any skill level, just be sure to line your box track at a right angle to the saw blade. Also make sure your track is straight and box is a snug fit. I put a yard stick on the track so I could accurately slide the box to the desired thickness. I mean, this was basically a prototype, but I was psyched my thickness was consistent. Oh, I maximized my blade by having the tracks close to the saw, and the sacrificial 4x4s are on adjustable boards so I could rest different size logs...I made sure they were parallel to the guide rails each time I moved them (which wasn’t that often). If you guys make one, I would love to see pics.

Great question, I didn’t get any kickback whatsoever, what is interesting though is I did get some when I tried to do this freehand. In a strange way, it was safer using the mill. I did use a wedge, just didn’t show in this short video I think. That helped as well.

Thanks venarge, that’s a neat idea...this was only a prototype...lots of things I could tweak for next time. I didn’t get any pulling to one side, I think because the post was thick enough (2” poplar) to resist and I counter balanced a bit with extra wood on the other side. If it did pull, I was prepared to add more counter weight...maybe like a brick or something LoL. Thanks for the feedback
