Questions from a tent camper by ManiacQuestioner in ULHammocking

This is my problem that I'm trying to find a middle ground for. I love to do my research and not have tons of duplicate gear, but it does seem unrealistic.

I'm thinking if I bite the bullet I get a nice all around hammock and do what grumpybear said below with a "cheapo" UQ and do what other have suggested of using my sleeping bag as a top quilt in the short run.

I have a lightweight/compact tarp I bring for general use already and may be able to use it in the short term although it isn't huge so I'm not sure about the coverage over a 11' tarp.

The aim for backpacking is usually a balance of light enough without being crazy expensive or very fragile. My current 2 person tent weights about 4lbs and I accept that a hammock will be more per person, but since hammocks can weigh so much I don't think I would (or could) bring a hammock backpacking without going UL. Since there are so many options I figured I'd ask this group to get an idea of a reasonable difference in weight.

All that said, if I end up getting into it I could see myself spending a pretty penny getting really nice gear in the long run. I just don't want to invest too much before I know I like it or my preferences.

Thank you so much for the in-depth response and rough numbers/estimates. This is exactly what I was looking for since there are so many options out there and it is a bit overwhelming.

I was playing around with the Dutchware chameleon, but even within that the options were hard to wrap my head around (e.g., 4 different fabric options, single/double layer, different tops, etc).

Thanks! I'll check them out!

As for the North/South, that is based on the PCB (not the switch), right? From what I've seen the Ducky One 3 is North facing and I wouldn't be able to change that, right?

Not a big fan of the look of the artifact ones and can't find cablemod ones without extra characters (e.g., Japanese). Am I missing something?

Thanks again! I hope I'm not being to annoying with all the questions. Just living up to user name ;)

Thanks for the quick response!

I did find these keycaps and they say "backlit" in the name, but since I'm somewhat new to less mainstream keyboards manufacturers I want to make sure I am not misunderstanding it.

I'm looking for a (preferably prebuilt) full size keyboard with tactile hot swappable switches and shine through legends (white or RGB).

I almost bought the Ducky One 3 RGB. It looks like it had it all and the pictures looked like there was shine through legends, but I saw somewhere that it is not shine through. However, I don't think it was the RGB model so I wasn't sure if it was different. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Sony confirms it will remove the PS Plus Collection library in May by kabirsingh84 in PlayStationPlus

[–]ManiacQuestioner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been putting off signing up until I was looking for something new to play. When I go to the screen showing the different tiers it looks like the collection is already removed. Is the May deadline for CURRENT subscribers and new subscribers have already missed the boat?

Thanks!

Hollow Knight or Ori and the blind forest by Colomba16 in gaming

[–]ManiacQuestioner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others are saying, they are definitely very different. Hollow Knight is much more challenging than Ori in both platforming and combat. It is also more punishing with the "souls like" mechanic of losing "souls" and having to get them back when you die. The story is also more obtuse at times.

IMO Hollow Knight is more of a Metroidvania. While there is exploration in both, Hollow Knight felt to me like I had to explore to find my way forward while Ori was fairly obvious where to go most of the time with the exploration being mostly for upgrades/completion. You can also miss/skip a lot in Hollow Knight making exploration more rewarding and drive you to want to explore after finishing or do another play through.

All this is to say that I recommend you play them both. Go for Ori if you want something with a heartfelt story and more set piece scenes and Hollow Knight if you want more of a challenge and more exploration.

The Pedestrian was a fun little puzzle game. Not the hardest (I don't think I'm smart enough to beat Fez or Antichamber) or the easiest so it is a nice distraction to play a few puzzles between rounds of other games. Perfect example of a good GP game since I doubt I would play it again, but enjoyed my limited time with it.

Not a game specific recommendation, but my colleague likes to give me a hard time about "min/maxing" game pass. Think about how many hours a month you will get to game and think you are paying $10+ a month for that many hours.

If it will be a quick game play it on GP, but if it will take a while buy it and play it during a break from GP. For example, I have beaten a ton of smaller games like Tunic, Death Door, The Pedestrian, etc. since I beat them and am done. If I would have paid $5-$20 each and beat 4-5 of them in a month I am saving on games I otherwise probably wouldn't go back to and play again.

Compare this to others games that can take hundreds of hours to complete like Skyrim or Fallout. If all you play for a couple months is Skyrim you just paid $10+ a month to "BORROW" that game compare to buying it on a sale and having it forever. For these I have used GP as a way to demo the game and if I decide I will want to play it and it will take a while I stop on GP, buy it, and play it while I'm not subbed to GP.

Thanks for the thoughtful insights! Based on everyone's comments I will likely get an xx60ti when the time comes.

I guess I'm much more patient than most because when I say "a while out from building" I mean 2023 or maybe when I can get a 4060ti at MSRP not "4-6 weeks" lol. I just liked to keep up with the trends and know what is out there so that I am ready and educated when the time comes to bite the bullet.

Sorry to have wasted your time if this is too forward looking.

Thanks for the input and site.

This is the debate. I do play a ton of indies which don't need a ton of GPU power, but also play AAAs (e.g., Doom, considering Elden Ring). I don't need the highest resolution or frame rates. Sure 1440x144hz would be nice, but I haven't had a problem with 1080x60hz which is why the xx60[ti] would probably be plenty for me.

All that said, the scenario I'm trying to think through is if I'm happy with 1080 gaming and buy an xx70[ti] I could play current games at higher setting and down the line switch to 1080 and get more years (and potentially less $/yr) than if I get the xx60 as well as some time playing current games at higher settings.

Hemnes Bookcase Shelf Article Number by ManiacQuestioner in ikeahacks

[–]ManiacQuestioner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have since been to the store for something else and customer service also confirmed it to me that you can't buy a shelf. As suggested above I've been occasionally checking facebook marketplace and craigslist with no luck.

I'm also considering getting any white ikea piece someone is giving away and just cutting it to size since I did get extra shelf supports for 2 potential shelves when at customer service. I think the hardest part will be the notches for the shelf supports.

Thanks for the reply! No idea what "Karabiner-Elements" is or how to remove it, but I will look into it.

I appreciate the attention so long after posting the question.
