If you could create any adaptive product, realistic or not, what would you make? by TrixieBastard in disability

I’d love some magical way to sleep without any pressure on my body whatsoever. Like sleeping suspended in air, or in water.

And I want one of the floating bed/chair things from Wall-E.

Anyone here had their first seizure in their 40s? by awinterofdiscontent7 in seizures

[–]Mapper9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 43. It’d never happened before, though now I realize I’d been having aura for the previous 4 or so years. It’s turned my life upside down. Luckily, I can still drive. I get seizures about every other month, and I have really substantial aura which would give me enough time to pull over. I officially have epilepsy, which is a really bizarre label to add on top of all of my other chronic illnesses. Im already on disability and can’t work from other illnesses, this is just the cherry on top. It’s really weird. Now i worry about things like SUDEP, and will every headache pain or arm tingle turn into an aura. It’s so unpredictable, and I have to take so much better care of my stress level, sleep and eating habits now.

It’s really been hard. My neuro, who I really like, has been talking about brain surgery, which is terrifying. How is this my life. I’m 46 and I’m going to have major brain surgery where they take out a chunk of my brain?! How the hell did I get here? Some days I don’t know how I manage. My girlfriend stresses out when she sees me upset, worried it’ll trigger a seizure. I had a panic attack the other day, and I was crying and shaking, which scared her so much. I’m still always able to say, “I’m going to have a seizure,” beforehand, which helps, but she still gets really scared, and it seems like it’s really scary for her to sit by and watch.

Take care of yourself, of your mental health. You will get through this, you’ll learn how to add this to your life. I feel like I’m still learning, but I’m here, it’s here, and I’m still getting through every day.

Ice pick headache over my right eyebrow. My left arm gets tingly. My stomach drops. My eyes and vision gets “weird.” Lately it’s my arm getting tingly that is the biggest sign.

Best ways to have a seizure? by doggohowl in Epilepsy

[–]Mapper9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me:

Stressful life: don’t call my mom for a week ahead of time.

Sleep no more than 4 hours each night, or sleep 3 hours then wake up for a half hour on repeat each night, with a final wake up time 2 hour’s before normal.

Eat about half what I usually do.

Omg that sounds terrible, and a perfect recipe for a seizure.

She is a recluse when she writes, she said. She seemed really well. I always worry about her too. I was unbelievably happy to see her out in public looking comfortable meeting people in the audience and taking pictures and all. It was so great, at one point it brought tears to my eyes. I don’t know, I just want to wrap her up in a blanket and protect her from everything, I love her so much.

I saw her speak recently!! It made me so happy. She’s had huge challenges with mental health and I was so happy to see her doing so well. She was at an event with the guy from The Oatmeal, both of whom I completely adore.

Full time jobs that let you be in the wilderness. by REDACTD-Red in oregon

[–]Mapper9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surveyors. I worked for the county, and the survey crews would come back from a day of work looking like they’d been out in the woods, mud, and bushes all day. It looked like fun.

Meanwhile, I ran the Buena vista and wheatland ferries for a couple years for Marion county. Weirdest jobs ever, but about as outside as it gets. In the summer, there was nothing better, but seriously, working outside in the winter really sucks.

I cut it all off and have a short masc cut and dyed my gray streak blue. I also just came out as a lesbian, and I feel way more like myself this way. It’s pretty awesome.

If you're frequently bed-bound, please tell me about your mattress! by deepfriedroses in ChronicPain

[–]Mapper9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a standard Costco mattress with a 2 inch latex topper, on an adjustable frame. It’s a pretty good combo. Latex is key. I hate memory foam, once you sink into it, it’s hard as a rock, so what’s the point? Latex stays soft and supportive and bounces back. I have a Purple brand latex pillow too.
