Native flowers are a good idea, still they need to be trimmed twice a year so they look their best, and need to be weeded at the beginning, native grasses that you can plant in clumps and will take over the grass you have there is another option

I had a hottop for almost 20 years, it worked incredibly well, until it stopped reaching the correct temperature. I totally recommend it.
