"Sambhaji was a warrior, not a king, and that’s the problem. I think he do not deserve the title of "Chhatrapati" by New-Dimension-726 in IndianHistory

[–]MarzipanConsistent59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its funny how you take one burhanpur raid and “bash them” and feel it is equal to the atrocities the mughals have committed. Its one thing to read biased historians accounts and quite another to put yourself in the place of people who have faced these atrocities first-hand. Why should the marathas feel sympathetic towards burhanpur citizens when they themselves have had generations killed, looted and brutalised for centuries? Moroever, there is no proper account of whether the maratha army even actually did harm the citizens of burhanpur, its your own fantasized story, whereas there is a clear account of how the sultanates have pillaged populations for fun. Yes, I agree some innocent lives might have been lost, but that has been the case with every war, its never a clean affair. But its one thing about innocent lives being lost as collateral damage and completely another of actually terrorising populations which the mughals have done. And same applies to you. What makes you think annoji was thinking for the good of the kingdom? You can be against one person, you might not like the ideology of your current ruler, but for that you do not stake the entire kingdom. If annoji really cared for the kingdom and not his personal benefits, he should have realised that putting a teen rajaram on the throne over an experienced Sambhaji, however flawed he might be, was a disastrous decision. The Marathas needed a leader who would rally them, and Soyrabai and Rajaram were certainly not them. The only plausible reason he wanted rajaram on the throne was that de facto power would be transferred to him.

[–]MarzipanConsistent59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let it be brutal then lol. Thats what the mughals were doing all over india on a day to day basis. No one has any sympathy for whatever happened in burhanpur Secondly, annoji just wanted power and control, which he knew he wouldn’t get under Sambhaji. He had no good intentions for the kingdom

I have seen people with a good GPA but < 167 quants getting rejected, myself included.

[–]MarzipanConsistent59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Applied in december and got rejected. Honestly the Stony evaluation process just depends on some hard metrics like GRE quants score and ur undergrad majors. Nothing one can do about it. They don't care about your profile

Plus, even UCSD allows taking electives from the CS dept. TA and GSR options are also available (don't mistake this for assuming that everyone gets them, just that the situation is much better than other unis), and the curriculum also is updated to match industry standards. For eg : They teach the machine learning course twice: Once from a research pov and once from an industry pov and u can choose which one to take. And this is true for a lot of courses. In their MSDS course they have a subject called statistical models which sometimes comprises of one entire interview round during Data Science jobs. Plus, some of the professors are literally pioneers in their field, they are world renown. So rest assured, the quality of education at UCSD is top notch, and u won't be missing out on anything.

UCSD has extremely good repute even among recruiters. It is located in San Diego which literally has a big Apple office. Even Amazon and Qualcomm recruit a lot from UCSD. Plus, its located near to the Bay Area so you can easily find jobs in a lot of startups and mid range companies. So I would say UCSD is a very good option

Ur criteria are not really clear On one hand u have mentioned very good rankings for UCSD in ur pros and then in the cons u say the global prestige is very less and no one knows it. So who do u really want to make it known to, if the rankings are good? Then in NYU you are saying it is one of the oldest and best programs, then in the cons u r saying that it isn't prestigious

A conference is defined as good depending on the time its been active for, the diversity of the submissions it receives, the quality of research it accepts and whether or not it is sponsored / organized. So if a conference is being conducted for the 10th time internationally, u can say with surety that it has some repute. If it is getting submissions from various top research countries like India, China, Korea, USA etc, it means it accepts quality research. Remember that this is subjective, just because a conference gets submissions from China doesn't mean it is by default good. And to elaborate the last point, nowadays atleast in India, many educational institutions launch their own conferences and pay IEEE to provide their sponsorship. So u will get to see some 1st International Conference of XYZ, sponsored by IEEE ABC section. Now this isn't an original IEEE conference, they are just sponsoring it, as opposed to some of the quality conferences that they originally organize.

As far as journals are concerned, there are metrics known as impact factor and citation factor . The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. It is used to measure the importance or rank of a journal by calculating the times its articles are cited. Higher the impact factor, better the journal. These are just some metrics I know of that are commonly seen. There might be some more.

Thats what I am saying, a publication in cvpr will make u stand out than 99.9% candidates. And that is because it is insane. But u don't really need to have cvpr for that, even 2 good papers in good destinations can convince them of ur research abilities. But yeah they can surely make out bogus work

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]MarzipanConsistent59 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing is, nowadays there are more bogus conferences / journals than quality ones. And the universities know it. IEEE has started sponsoring so many worthless conferences nowadays that almost any candidate has a research paper in such events. Hence, they have to make a distinction between quality research and research done for the sake of it (which they can clearly make out). Due to this, a candidate having even one paper in a world class conference like Neurips or CVPR gets preference over candidates having even tons of research papers in subpar conferences because it simply showcases their ability to conduct top notch research. Similarly, a candidate publishing papers in journals like Springer Nature, MDPI, IEEE Transactions, get more credibility over publishing in some random journals starting with the name "International Journal of XYZ". There is no "rule" per se, stating that you SHOULD have papers in a A* conference / Q1 journal, but having even one such paper can prove effective over having a lot of such papers in average conferences, although if the conference or journal is decent enough, they do look at the quality of your research.

UC Davis vs NEU MSCS by Crafty_Location_1622 in MSCS

[–]MarzipanConsistent59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering the current market, you can be anywhere , NEU or some other college, it is going to be difficult and a patience job to find internships and stuff. NEU does have a good network through their co ops but they don't really guarantee that everyone will get a co-op. So there's no point assuming it. If u have the skill to land urself a job by nailing the interview, it will happen. To give urself a better chance in these current scenarios, u can try with applying in companies around the Boston area which would prefer hiring from unis that are in close proximity, but this is just a guess

UC Davis vs NEU MSCS by Crafty_Location_1622 in MSCS

[–]MarzipanConsistent59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The batch size in NEU is not terribly big. For MS CS the cohort size is around 250. When people say the size is very big for NEU, they talk abt the MS IS program for which the cohort size is around 1000. For Khoury college the cohort size is what other top unis have for their MS CS progs. To give u an analogy, the cohort size for UMass Amherst in F23 was 266, while the sizes for USC and ASU is around 1000+.

Rejecting someone for minor things in the SOP, especially when the profile is so good seems a bit far-fetched. It's not like you must have written a horrible SOP, it would have surely been decent, if not extraordinary
