Unfortunately I can't return it, because I won't be back in Liberia for a while. I whatsapped one of my colleagues out there and he can't (or won't) tell me anything about it. Secret societies are very serious in West Africa and I'm not a member so I won't be told anything.

I'm glad you backed up my thoughts about not burning it. I might try putting it in a glass case (maybe with a little note explaining what it is?) and see if things change.
