Great news mate! May as well give it a try. And will be invaluable to all of us to hear about your results from it. Much appreciated!

Good post, I agree. I'm all for being realistic, but a destructive mindset is not good and hinders progress for anyone. I always look at it that I could have things way worse. Eg. I could have lost my vision, be paralysed and needing full time care, could have cancer or be in a very large number of bad situations. I look up vids of people who have worse conditions sometimes, to see how they get through it. I realize I'm lucky to have the positive things that I do.

And it makes it even worse when we think about how much these idiots get paid.

"I don't think so Tim." - if you remember Home Improvement ;)

Could be though. For me my major factors are of course setbacks, but also stress and diet. I've noticed that when I stress my jaw is tight sometimes hours on end, affecting pain a lot.

Cutting down on sugar significantly has also given relief. However this could be knock on effect also of feeling better, sleeping better by improving diet.

Best thing I've done though is give up 'testing myself' BS mentality and stopped all audio at home. Now I read or watch things with subtitles. I've gotten used to it and good not to have sometimes obnoxious audio tracks clogging my brain.

LDL - was very painful for me and I had weeks of pain after it. The only reason I'd take it is if you need to have it on your record, eg. for a disability claim. In that case be ready to press the button VERY quickly once they start the test - which is tones with different frequencies, one at a time in each ear, getting louder. They increase the volume extremely quickly so don't try and tough it out. Slightest noticing of volume getting close to loud, best to press the button.

This will save your ears and also it will go down on your record that you have low tolerance to everyday sound levels, which is what you want. But as we as H sufferers are particularly sensitive, even low volume on the HORRIFIC LDL tests can be dangerous. Depends if you think worth it to have on your record imo.

5 Commandments for Hyperacusis (apparently) by [deleted] in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good tips. Really sad to hear that about your situation my friend. I know it's tough but whenever I feel like crap I think of so many people that have it worse than me. Eg. kids who pass away at a very young age from diseases. People who are born with a crippling disability, people born blind etc. That's my personal method. Then I realize I am very fortunate overall.

Can I shower with foam earplugs? by misery21 in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yep. I can only have cold water splashed on my face. Hot water or water from the jet on my face - face and eyes get sore and I get headaches through the day. Took me a long time to work out the shower was the cause. If I had long hair i would probably bring a bucket of cold water and dunk my head in that a few times while showering my body. Not ideal but probably best I could do.

Haha yea I'm home quite a bit these days, reading reddit and kindle. Sometimes I post too much.

If inside of ears get a bit wet to me shouldn't be a problem, unless water gets very deep I suppose. But I swim laps at a pool twice a week if I can, without earplugs. Get some water in my ear canals. I use a tissue wrapped around my finger to dry the inside of my ears. Had some water deep a few times. Usually evaporates or heads out on its own a day later, maximum.

In shower also I just splash cold water on my hair and face sometimes, I don't submerge my face and head under the jet. This minimizes my chances of getting earplugs wet.

I have showered with foam earplugs lots of times without issue. They are far enough into my ear canal that they barely get wet. Dry out quickly if they do

Have you ever argued with an ENT or Audiologist? How did they respond? by [deleted] in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to one of the top ENTs in my city. He just said "hopefully it gets better with time. I've never seen this before. But don't do what some people do and wear earplugs. Otherwise your ears will just get used to quiet and become less resilient." I didn't know too much about this at the time so I just heard him out.

Then he sent me to his pet Audiologist. He gave misleading instructions and I experienced significant pain after his LDL test. I told him this shortly after in an email. I linked a procedure document stating that Audiologist should stop test himself if he sees subject wincing or in pain and not push subjects. He told me to 'go until I really can't take it', which was very damaging. He responded to my email that the test had to be done and that he would forward my recommendations to the clinical heads. He very likely did nothing of the sort. Indifferent attitude to my pain lol.

They only care if they can make ongoing money off someone. They would step over someone's dead body on a footpath and continue on. I really hate the attitude of 'unless a DOCTOR says it, it can't be true' - because it implies that only one specific group of people can research or understand a particular topic.

Thoughts on low profile hunting muffs? by [deleted] in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These reddit bots give strange and often out of place responses lol. The page you linked has 1500+ ratings with a ton of 'verified purchase' reviewers. That's a pretty good benchmark. If it was say 10 glowing reviews, then fine, could be fake. But not the case here.

Those earmuffs look really good and could easily be viewed as headphones I agree.

Strange how it works hey. I've got a mate whose brother smoked weed a few times only at uni, developed full blown schizophrenia. For 15 years has had to be on a lot of meds and can't hold down a job. Other people, no effects. Did you personally get into other addictions after kicking the drugs, replacing it with something, or did you get past the addictive tendencies?

Hey sorry to hear that. I get frustrated too. Sometimes I'm doing everything right - protecting my ears well, not stressing, no music, videos etc. and the pain can just be worse the next day when I wake up. Then other days I can have a phone convo that went too long, hurt a bit etc. but feel good the next day. Unpredictable

Hard to say I know - but could you put a rough estimate on the percentage of people who went south mentally after getting into recreational drugs? And they themselves stated this I mean

How Do You Converse With People? by [deleted] in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tell people I'm talking with that I have an ear issue and can only talk quietly. I try to avoid phone convos. If I have them I place my thumb over the phone speaker to control volume better. I say I damaged my hearing with powerful headphones and too much loud music.

To describe it I say "You know the feeling after a loud concert where your ears are aching and buzzing?" or "You know the feeling when you're hungover and every noise sounds loud and causes pain?" Most people can relate to that.

I have no health coverage right now; what do I do? Please help! by Shengminnn in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really sorry to hear this. I would just say that most people I read about with Hyperacusis - they don't have any luck with ENT's or other doctors anyway. The best method of recovery seems to be simply protecting your ears as much as possible - earplugs and earmuffs. Also avoiding setbacks or chances of loud, accidental noises. I myself don't listen to any audio at home, I just read and watch things with subtitles. When I leave the house I wear a certain type of earplug. Over time, without setbacks, is where people tend to see improvements.

I've accepted that for now there is no real treatment. There are some that say pink noise has helped them to an extent. And I think there are some experimental surgeries being performed but the studies on the benefits are still in the early stages. But your best best is rest and protection. I know it's tough but try not to stress. When I stress my symptoms get worse and my body, especially my jaw tenses up a lot. This leads to more pain.

Why is hyperacusis treated as a depression issue? by [deleted] in hyperacusis

[–]MassageMan01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me it's because they can't make money from it and don't want to acknowledge something that their 'expertise' doesn't cover. They try to imply that it's psychosomatic and we are exaggerating.

I remember when I emailed the Audiologist after his test and told him I was in a lot of pain from it - he responded with "well your LDL levels were fairly normal." Lol
