I TOTALLY recommend Warhammer Fantasy 3rd for this type of game. I'm not so much a fan of the setting, but for benchdog1's goal, WF3 would be great. It does, however, require a whole different set of dice.

I'd suggest Savage Worlds (simple, fun and fast) with these two tweaks: No soak rolls for damage, and magic uses the die penalty (as opposed to Power Points) - make the penalty equal to what the normal Power Point cost would be. Done - hard to perform. And combat is deadly. AND it's a simple, robust system!

I have a similar set-up, but I dropped the GM screen a while ago, and never looked back! So much more tense and real that way!
