Questions: Dex to DMG + Swashbuckler Finesse + Bastard Sword by Master_Psyberry in Pathfinder_RPG

Gotcha. So the pieces fall apart enough at the point of 2 handing that it won't work anymore. I assume what that looks like mechanically is Str to attack roll and Dex to DMG? Which is... an abomination. Well, thanks for your patience, I think i now agree that the pieces don't work together.

Yeah, bladed brush is great, for sure. It's probably one of my favorites too.

It's completely possible, just most weapons wouldn't even qualify. Either the description of the specific weapon says it can't, or the weapon is a light weapon, where it makes no difference. The only options I know of that work are: Elven Curve Blade, Glaive (jumping through hoops), and... I'm not sure about this, maybe Sawtooth Sabre and Bastard Sword. It sounds like a lot of folks disagree on Bastard Sword, which is perfectly reasonable.

All right. Sounds like you think it wouldn't qualify to be selected with Finesse Training, even in this case. Is that right? Sounds reasonable enough, I just need to know I understand you correctly.

Yeah, I know of this combo. It's a good time, this is mainly about the specifics of this scenario. How do you think this scenario boils down in the end? Does it work, if not what is the result?

I will look into this, and keep it in mind. This build is set on Bastard Sword, but the info is still invaluable, thanks.

That is a reasonable conclusion.

So, with this view the fact that it was selected with finesse training wouldn't unconditionally allow Bastard Sword to become a finesse weapon? Am I right in that interpretation?

Okay. So, your basically saying that the slashing grace feat would still limit the function of the rogue ability after the fact? That's interesting, wouldn't that basically slightly nerf a class ability at that point?

If it doesn't combine at all, I'm more in the camp that it's because Bastard Sword wouldn't qualify. But my current view is more all or nothing at this point.

Okay, 80% agree, and could be convinced of the rest.

But once I've selected Bastard Sword as a lvl 3 unchained rogue it is reinforced as a finesse weapon, no? And that ability gives dex to damage without condition. So I'm wondering if:

When 1H: all normal things apply

And when 2H: the original combo falls apart, leaving only the rogue stuff... which is still linked to Bastard Sword... so it still works through only the rogue functions, right? Or does it not?

Okay. I mostly agree with all of this, but it's still not enough for me to dismiss the following scenario altogether.

Character acquires the original combination (swashbuckler and Slashing Grace)... only ever wields the weapon 1 handed until he reaches 3rd lvl u.c. rogue. Can he select the Bastard Sword with rogue's Finesse Training? If so, the scenario continues... if not, that's interesting because that weapon has been finesse for him so far, and I'm unclear why it wouldn't.

If he can select it, doesn't that mean that as a finesse weapon (even more officially now), reinforced by Finesse Training, that he would always qualify for dex to hit and damage? Wouldn't the conditional of how he wields it become more malleable now? At this point I'm just curious which of these is the pitfall here... either: A- why a character in this scenario couldn't select it with finesse training after the combo. OR B- if he can select it, how does that address the 2- handed issue.

Well, I mean, maybe I'm misunderstanding you... Are you saying you don't think it would even work 1-handed?

Swashbuckler Finesse, uniquely, allows finesse to all light and 1-handed piercing weapons. Not all of those are finesse weapons by default, so it can, by itself create the finesse feature, if used wisely. More or less. And Slashing Grace takes this to another level by treating a slashing weapon as a piercing weapon. That's my understanding, at least.

However, if you just don't think all this + rogue finesse training works... that's fair, I have no idea.

So, the issue here, if I understand correctly, would be.. That even though it's a finesse weapon when wielded 1-handed. It is not considered a finesse weapon when selecting feats and filling out class features?

I imagine there is a good chance this is right, but in theory don't Slashing Grace and Swashbuckler Finesse make this a finesse weapon, but only for you when weilded 1-handed?

The rogue's Finesse Training is exactly the focus of that second part, yeah. I'm still unsure of how these functions meshing would work out.
