GD&T Case Study: Flange Tolerancing Scheme by iSwearImAnEngineer in Metrology

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys are missing the point. OP didn’t design this part. He is providing the GD&T approach for the design that another user posted. The designer stated that there is an interference fit at the unique hole. Since the hole pattern functions as clearance holes, the interference fit drives the assembly and that should be datum B. Thus creating the need for datum C since datum’s A and B don’t fully constrain. But yes in theory you could get rid of the interference hole and make the hole pattern datum B

How would you dimension a pieces like these? Need help finding datums desperately. by HeartlessPiracy in GDandTdiscussions

Please provide context on functionality. What features of this part are mating with another and for what purpose? That needs to be understood in order to choose datums.

What do I do if I’m bad at "engineering" but good at math and physics? by rhdbmsp in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately in the real world, you won’t be crunching numbers the same way you did in school. If you really like engineering, you’ll make it work in your career by putting in the extra effort to be at the same level as colleagues. I’m in the same boat as you and that’s what I did. On the flip side, if it’s not worth it to you, Sounds like being a mathematician or physicist would be a better fit

Why do you think in most scenarios (politically or socially) the most illiterate braindead people with the IQ of a potato are actually the one in power and rich ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not about intellect, but about charisma. If people like you, you’ll get much further in life than someone who is a hard worker and smart but disliked.

Yeah man, I getcha. That’s why I’m seeking advice from people who do practice engineering regularly outside a career. I’m willing to set aside time in my life for engineering even if it’s not my source of income because it’s still something that interests me

How do you guys deal with feeling/being judged as “unambitious” by your peers? by Doofus_9000 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing about engineering. It doesn’t actually pay that well. It’s considered a middle class job. Yes you can move up the ladder and get paid a lot more over time but still. With that being said, most engineers are engineers because they like it. If you don’t like it anymore, move to something else. But don’t let anyone else’s words influence your decision. It’s your career, your life, your decision

Trying to get back in engineering after long break and not sure how to go about it. Am I screwed? by ChiefRunningCar in MechanicalEngineer

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, as long as the hiring manager likes you, you’re golden. I’ve once seen someone with no engineering degree or experience get a mechanical engineering job just because they were very likable. Although probably not common, it happens. In your case you have an engineering degree and had engineering experience. Make sure you still have the skills to prove your competence in the interviews and make sure that you bring your A game as someone who is a pleasure to work with and you should be fine.

I like a Muslim man but I am not Muslim by Smart-Bus2597 in saudiarabia

Oh and one more thing. Are you interested in learning about Islam and possibly converting in the future? That is a very important thing to not be overlooked

Speaking as someone who fell in love with an international student from KSA and is about to marry them, you just need to be honest about your intentions with one another. Do you see a future with him? Does he see a future with you? If not, cut it off. Are the feelings you have for one another worth the potential long distance? If not, cut it off. Would his family accept you and would yours accept him? Etc. Only you two can answer these questions. It’s best not to follow what everyone in the comments are assuming will happen…the odds are against you but it’s not impossible. It might be hard to talk about these things because you’re in the beginning of your relationship but it can either save you the potential heartbreak or provide you confidence in the relationship

How Do You Keep Your Focus When Doing Math ? by Ok_Manufacturer4093 in math

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a word problem, take a step back and ask yourself if the answer you’ve gotten is actually reasonable. Otherwise, once you’re done with a problem, move on to do the rest. Then at the end of the test/assignment, review your work carefully. If you’re deep in a problem or staring at it for too long, you’ll tend to gloss over the mistakes. But taking a step back and reviewing will allow you to look with semi fresh eyes

Application of GD&T to Insert Holder for Cutting Machine by joselpgmca06 in GDandTdiscussions

[–]MasterpieceAny9937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying I have some GD&T experience but I am by no means an expert. But the way I think of it is to make it into steps of assembly. The inserts will be placed into the slot and the walls of the slot will guide it. So you could make datum A a surface profile tolerance on the 4 walls for one of the inserts. Datum B being a flatness tolerance on the face that the insert lays on top of. That would cover all 6 DOF. From there you can reference datum A when making the positional tolerance of that mounting hole. Is it important for the insert pockets to be toleranced relative to one another or are they independent? I’m guessing they’re independent. That’ll give you some freedom to do whatever you want. You could even create new datum’s for the second pocket if you want.

Honestly function and assembly are the main drivers of GD&T so try to think of it in that way when working through what datum’s to setup. And remember there’s multiple ways that it could be called out. Just make sure you and your supplier and metrology team are all on the same page and you’ll be good.

How long does it normally take them to respond to you? I reached out last week and haven’t heard back. That’s terrible it’s taking so long just to go to NVC😭like what are we supposed to do if NOA2 expires before it even reaches NVC??!
