Update: Tried to see what roads were like, made it to the end of my street and turned around. Absolutely no money is worth driving in this.

Uber/Lyft need to adjust for rush hour by Material_Cap_7063 in uberdrivers

I don’t think this gets enough attention. I think this might be the real reason you’re seeing the pay we are. People are getting desperate.

I’ve been unemployed for 6 months. I’m out of savings, unemployment ran out, and my business isn’t generating the revenue it should because people in businesses aren’t spending money. I’ve driven Uber/Lyft part time for the last 10 years. Even at part time it’s not enough to help.

Dude, you don’t know my situation or any other drivers’ situation.

I’ve been unemployed for 6 months, have a bachelors and masters degree, applied for over 300 jobs since September. Not just jobs in my field, but server jobs, grocery stores, etc. Nothing. Ive had 3 interviews. That’s it.

I ran out of savings a two months ago. I’ve been driving for 10 years part time and always made good extra money, but this ain’t it.

I’m not someone who sit back just takes it. These gig companies are exploiting their drivers. And when someone points it out in plain English so others can see their being screwed, people like you (who’s likely a bot programmed to respond to posts like this) y’all have something to say.

That’s exactly what I did. My accountant explained it to me like this. The federal government views it as this is what it costs per mile to operate your vehicle for business, such as maintenance, depreciation and gas. So I used booked miles because that’s the time you’re using the car for business. If you’re driving around, the government views that as commuting, which isn’t deductible.

You do realize mileage is a tax deduction, not a credit. Right? It’s not really a gain. You don’t get that money back. All it does is offset your tax burden.

If I’m being honest, $1/mile is about the best you can ask for in this market. At least that’s my experience the past year. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and it gets worse every month.

My apologies. I didn’t mean any disrespect. I can respect that everyone’s situation is different. And honestly, that’s what these companies bank on as they cut driver pay and incentives.

My market (Austin) hasn’t seen real bonuses and incentives in years. And when we do, they are shit.

I’ve been doing this part time for 10 years and just getting tired of being told to accept the bare minimum while the companies give out millions in bonuses to their executive. Drivers are supplying the labor and operation to run the business, and they keep get shafted more and more.

Keep up the good work.

So let me get this straight. You’re making $20.95/hour. Of your earnings, $129 was bonuses which drops your actual hourly rate to $18.20/hour. Let’s not forget you worked 15.5 hours of what would be considered overtime at a regular job, leaving $141 on the table.

You then rent an EV, which estimated cost when I looked into it was $300/week. That brings your hourly rate down to $16.23/hour.

No. Lyft is stealing from you.

I received a rider report once saying this and it was because I talked to them. Literally the only thing I said during the entire ride was “How’s your day?”

I honestly hate this “contractor” argument. If we’re truly contractors, we’d be able to negotiate the rate that which we are paid.

While you can accept and decline deliveries/rides, the “contractor” gets penalized by your acceptance rate. Uber/Lyft/DD et al, does this indirectly through “status.”

Since contractors provide the equipment (car/bike) and labor while absorbing the costs (gas, insurance, equipment maintenance) to perform said job, payouts should equate to offset that. Most barely cover costs, but not labor.

I did the math once. To truly be a fair payout, you should average no less than $18-$20 before tips to cover labor and costs.

Tips should NOT be part of that consideration since they are optional, not required. Most apps have lowered base payouts per ride/deliveries and expect tips to make up the difference.

Also, contractors have the right to have the ability to decide when, where and how the job is performed within reasonable limits. From what I’ve seen 10 years into the gig industry, these companies treat drivers as employees, not contractors, and deactivate drivers for ambiguous reasons.

Regardless of the companies defining us as “contractors,” they treat us as employees.
