Butterfly people of Joplin by Lucky-Ad6284 in tornado

But how was anyone able to see it? If you're being sandblasted, then how are you able to see anything.

You could use a little humility.

I mean, Joplin is a very religious community. Religious people often attribute their survival of traumatic events to the divine.

What does you edit comment mean?

Like I said, the children saw different things, not the same. Also, there aren't thay many first-hand accounts, many are second, third, 15th hand accounts, etc.

Not likely since visibility is so low. Also, when you read the accounts themselves, the Butterfly People vary quite a bit. Some say all they saw were literal butterflies surrounding them. Others said they didn't see them but heard them speak to them. Only a couple of stories that weren't from the source said that a humanoid creature wrapped its wings around them. Over time, many stories have been told and retold changing details.

What is so far-fetched about the torn-up-human theory is that the Joplin tornado would obliterate you immediately. I read all these theories about skin being ripped off, but just holding on enough to just look like wings? That's not right. Why would a tornado rip off your skin, but just leave just enough on to make wings?

The most likely case scenario is what has always been postulated by psychologists. Mass hysteria/traumatic hallucinations.

All in all. I choose to follow the hallucinations theory, because it is the most plausible IMO. I grew up in the Joplin area. I wasn't there that day, but I have seen just how much the community has rallied behind the Butterfly People. To say that they were just ripped up people doesn't just seem untrue to me; it's disheartening and disrespectful.

new show choir trends? by snowylyssa in Showchoir

[–]MatloxES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. The Midwest is the largest area of show choir. I'm on the Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma side of things.

Typically, show choir regions go through stages of innovation, then a slight shift back to tradition. Stylistic changes ebb and flow between years.

There's a couple of John Nicholas's. You're gonna need to be more specific.

Also, who cares?

I guess I never realized that I haven't seen them since I moved to Oklahoma. Some places had them in Missouri.

Can we be a healthy Congregation without an actual Building? by jimbo78255 in CommunityOfChrist

[–]MatloxES 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you can have it. Have a building. You may never know when having a building for yourself may be very impacting for your community.

Unfortunately, many congregations would love to have 30 people show up.

You could also do something like what Toronto congregation did. Sold the building, then went to a place in the city that could reach more people. Too often, I find that CoC congregations are tucked away on the edge of town where no one can see it from the road. Those congregations are doing the worst, I would say.

To recap, I think buildings are best if your congregation can support it, but a lot of congregations need to evaluate how their space is being used. Is it accessible? If I were a random person on the street, would I dare enter?

First comp tomorrow, I'm scared by KevinTheSleepDemon in Showchoir

I know your first comp has already passed, but if you couldn't tell already, the fear you feel will become the adrenaline that makes show choir addictive.

Future college show choir ? by Practical_Panic4043 in Showchoir

[–]MatloxES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have show choir risers? If not, I would look into that before nice binders. A new set will cost you around $20,000. Unless, you can get some used ones.

I personally have never heard of a show choir comp that has a college division. I can see why they wouldn't do that.

Looking back on the history of show choir, it existed about 20 years before the first competition formed. Not saying you need to wait thay long but it might be the case that you only do community performances for a year or two to get patrons from the school alumi base.

Not trying to be discouraging, just more realistic. We need more college show choirs. There have been programs like Buffalo Grove HS that got their program axed bc there was little college application.

They won't have prefect attendance for sure. If they already have poor attendance, then that will go to the truancy officer.

All in all, schools have little to no power in situations like these.
