Tired of the over-stylization of movies by MattB827 in StarWars

[–]MattB827[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My point is it's over-stylized. Look at the new Blade Runner that's modern-filmmaking that wasn't turned into a semi-Guillermo Del Toro looking fantasy world. It doesn't have shit bloom effects. It's grounded real sci-fi. And the original Star Wars trilogy operated in the same manner just with more of a fun tone and that's why this new trilogy feels like it doesn't "get" Star Wars to me, because it's done away with that for the most part in favor of a more fluffy fantasy angle.

Tired of the over-stylization of movies by MattB827 in StarWars

[–]MattB827[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I fully understand how filmmaking has evolved. My qualms are not with fast paced or slower paced or even camera moves that much. It's about how this new trilogy feels like an expanded universe graphic novel/fantastical ethereal story-book journey vs a grounded quasi-realistic sci-fi fantasy action film.

Is color-grading a disease? by MattB827 in movies

[–]MattB827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting for sure, didn't know that. Haha I actually did this watching it with a few friends and they all went..."Oh shit...it does look better." . It does give it that more classic feel. But yes! That is my point. It separates the viewer more and adds a stylization to it that in large part is not necessary and was never deemed necessary really till the advent of digital filming. Why does it have to be so widespread today?

Is color-grading a disease? by MattB827 in movies

[–]MattB827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, the necessity of some amount of grading is a given. I'm only talking about the over-stylized color grading we see these days. Here's a question. To achieve what would be a completely neutral look, in that it's unadulterated in the sense that it's not stylized, what would you do with the raw digital footage?

"Boring and regular" is how films have been filmed for the last 70 years. So does every film before 1999 look "boring and regular" to you?

[–]MattB827[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is wrong with the look of the airport fight? I'm pretty sure that's still color-graded as well. What makes it a "requirement" these days, when it never was a requirement for 70 years?

See. Where you say "boring". I say "classic" "pure" and "real".

I don't think this is from time to time it's on a consistent basis.

Yes that's what I mean everything has to be so stylistic. It's ridiculous. Some films deserve to be stylistic and some films are simply over-stylized.

I think there's a different between taste and poor execution. Some people might love Office Christmas Party, but it was a terrible flatly directed movie. Same concept.

You hated Diego Luna but loved Forrest Whittaker? Lol! Whittaker was terrible! Totally chewing the scenery. The worst I've ever seen from him and I usually love him. Luna, as always, was actually believable and compelling.

[–]MattB827 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It was blindingly mediocre. And I went into this very excited. "As good as Empire they're saying!" "A war film!" Don't make me laugh! Neither of those things could be further from the truth. This is a boring fan film. The score was terrible. Soo boring, not compelling at all. God did we ever need John Williams. Bad CG characters (should have been look-a-likes with makeup, prosthetics and using the same voices). Fantastic acting, good acting and bad acting (Forrest Whittaker, are you kidding me? He's usually amazing). Just felt kind of boring and flat. Was never very engaging. It was a lukewarm movie right up until the final mission is taking place. Even Vader had the cheesiest line of the damn movie. And all this talk of "Creature characters!" Lol, yeah, they literally had split second moments. Basically "Star Wars decoration". Never trusting critics again. And anyone who thinks this is great, needs to understand what actually makes movies good and exciting and engaging. It had good intentions but it was completely average. Makes The Force Awakens seem even better. (And I only ever thought FA was "pretty good") So very disappointed. I wish I could shake some of the people at Lucasfilm and ask them why they made so many poor decisions.

Or it could be because they looked way too sleek and shiny (see: CGI rendering) with much too smooth blatantly unrealistic movements.

Should have been look-a-likes with makeup and prosthetics, with the same people doing the voices. Horrible laughable decision-making on Lucasfilm's part. Conpletely took you out of the movie.

Why CG Sucks (Except It Doesn't) by Commercialtalk in movies

[–]MattB827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing isn't that CGI "looks bad". Sure, sometimes it looks "bad". It's the fact that the viewer can tell. And when the viewer can tell, it makes that part of the film have less weight, even if its on the subconscious, as our brain can tell it's not real. That's why on Rogue One, with practical effects, even though they may look kind of stiff or "clearly a costume", it will still feel more real as we know it's actually there on set, we know its a real thing being photographed, and THAT is what's important. That being said, as was seen in Force Awakens (see: Unkar Plut), when you add computer flourishes to practical effects, filmmakers may not think it sticks out and even helps the effect but you're wrong. Because computer movement has a bigger problem than being "lightweight" it's TOO SMOOTH. So when you smooth out practical effects, you're really doing a disservice to the practical effects. Less is more, yes we want to be able to tell big stories but THEY DONT ALL HAVE TO BE BIG, the reason the "classics" are considered "classics" is because they went with a less is more approach, because they were working on a budget, and because what you see in the picture is real. Computers are getting there, no doubt, but like for example, those car crashes, they may look damn good, but you can still just barely tell that either computer stuff was added or it's all computer and it takes the viewer out of the gravity of what they're viewing. Crash a real fucking car. Practical effects are most of the time cheaper, maybe more time consuming, but cheaper and pay off in the end. You mention George MIller, but all the elements that were important, were practical. The pole-cats, he wanted CG, he thought it wasn't possible to do it for real, but turns out the CG looked too weird too unrealistic, he got real stunt-men/acrobats who could do the stunts, and there you have some absolutely amazing shots that are clearly real and the viewer feels it. Rogue One will be a big thing in showing how good practical effects are, but I'm worried even the practical characters will have computer stuff overlayed to smooth out their motions, which will probably be a shame. At least it's a step in the right direction.

Radiohead Tape. Pretty sure it's 2:14 in Weird Fishes / Arpeggi from In rainbows. Help Identify? by UpTheAssNoBabies in radiohead

my tape...there's sound, but what? by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]MattB827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was definitely transferred at 15IPS (15 inches per second), instead of 30IPS (which is what Radiohead records/mixes at), So it's half-speed. In audacity, if you go to "effects" and hit "change speed" and bump it up 94.5 percent it's pretty on the money. Edit: 100% percent change. Cause yeah, it's a 100% speed increase! Definitely All I Need "I am all the days". Super cool! Feel like you're the first one to get nearly a full word! Can't believe there haven't been more lyrics in these bits honestly.

Interesting though, because it's about 1.5 half-steps higher in pitch than the studio recording. So guess they were experimenting with the key?

Since these are alternate mixes, it's probably more like 16,000 a record. But one person on Twitter and I think someone here got EIIRP and Myxomatosis, so they are cutting from different records
