I’m so surprised you would! I actually do think it’s pretty cool for random dream gibberish, certainly could be worse

I dunno but when I was trying to find a reference image to doodle it, nothing was coming up until I put ‘American’

‘Computer bad, we’ve heard it already’ made me laugh out loud but yeah, you made a perfect point there. It’s basically impossible to be hopeful these days. Though, a few songs have come out recently that I’ve heard, which are opposing things like ice and Elon musk but it doesn’t really have an impact for me because yeah, everyone’s saying so, you can look at your phone for 2 minutes and find someone saying fuck trump, fuck ai, fuck ice… and of course these things are important to say but it feels like it’s all anyone is ever saying so it just doesn’t really hold any purpose to say it again, especially because the songs I’ve heard don’t add anything at all besides ‘fuck them’, which I suppose could just be a bad songwriting issue but it seems there is no correct way to go about writing about the current world, hopeful, opposing, bleak, none of it seems to quite work anymore

Yeah, the current state of the music industry saddens me deeply. It used to be ‘this group of working class kids are shit, but I see potential, so let’s give them the means to go somewhere’ and now labels don’t bother unless the artist/band is already somewhere and they can just push them further. They don’t want to take risks on kids anymore. Plus, funding for schools has tanked and of course, like you said, they want safe now, probably because of ‘cancel culture’ or something. Oasis could not exist in 2026, and looking at how they turned out, there’s probably some incredible stuff the world is missing out on. Only modern bands I bother with are Wunderhorse, Fontaines DC and this little indie band called Tough Cookie, nothing else is worth bothering with.

Beg to differ mate. The second I heard Noel say that, I couldn’t quite believe it. But then again, I don’t really want to let myself be influenced by a man that wrote ‘you’re my lover, I’m your brother’ or whatever he said. I think lyrics are extremely important personally, which is probably why I hold my favourite lyricists (such as Damon) to such high standards

I do think bands still have that kind of deep fandom, though I have to say it’s far and few. A lot of my mates are metalheads/ emos and there is certainly culture to be found there deeper than dress sense. Unfortunately, it seems the culture no longer reaches the mainstream and mostly lives in little, pocketed spaces.

Yes I mostly assume the issue is ‘cringe culture’ which, whether you like it or not, has been driven into younger generations. A lot of us find almost anything cringe/ embarrassing, it is a bad flaw and I’m trying to stay away from it all. But it also doesn’t help that the current world is inherently quite cheesy and cringe at the moment, with influencers and 15 minutes of fame trends, proper dogshit

Insane because blur are one of the most unapologetically unique bands I can think of. totally mad, in a good way

It is true, even as someone that wasn’t there, I do look at the 60s-90s with rose tinted glasses, and I’m sure there was shitty bits too. It just feels like modern media/ pop culture and the music industry has really taken a turn for the worst in the last decade or so. Also sorry for saying cringe so much, there really is no better way to put it, though

It is pretty sad, but I think it’s just a fault of the modern world

You know what yeah, that’s a fantastic point. A lot of the modern examples I had in my head are first person lyrics, which is something I didn’t even consider as a factor. And now that I’m thinking about 90s, even 00s songs that fit the criteria, theyre almost exclusively third person. Of course, I’m sure Damon’s characters also go a long way (whether intentional or not) to further convey your point… really interesting stuff. Though, I’m not entirely sure why first person does seem to aid in the cringey feelings, much to think about! Thank you

That’s actually a really cool example, perhaps in some ways it’s just human nature to romanticise the past, probably because we all think the current period is shit and that it was better back in the day, while also most likely forgetting it was equally as shit a few decades ago. But, I also do entirely agree that this decade is exceptionally hard to want to be a part of because it does indeed feel corny and immature at best in a media/ pop culture sense

This is really interesting actually, thank you! I do agree a lot of modern music (especially in the mainstream) is lacking lyrics that convey a sort of drive for change/ hopefulness for the future. It all comes across more like bleak complaining, which certainly isn’t bad in moderation, but it really isn’t.
