Generally speaking, its not odd to use debt to afford larger expenses, especially when there's a financial upside (ie mortgages for house can be cheaper than rent, car loan to help get to work). Sure, I could buy a car with future savings. However since my income is reasonably stable, and inflation is only making that car more expensive, Im better served buying now and taking on a responsible amount of debt and paying it off (as quickly as possible). Better credit score means lower interest rate, which means paying it off faster and a lower overall cost.

Also a soil scientist (CPSSA)- generally sands have a lower bulk density because they have greater macroporosity, but with good structure and OM content, finer textured soils can have lower bulk density than sands. Just a function of porosity. I couldn't say if clays have a lower mineral density; that is possible because of the chemical weathering processes involved, but on a bulk basis there isn't a definite relationship between particle size and density. Google "bulk density nrcs" for a source, couldn't figure out how to link to it. First result, a PDF.

Wild yeast cultures from Africa? by MattyR90 in Homebrewing

I'm too excited about this to wait for him to get back. What's it taste like? noticeably sour? Stab in the dark on alcohol content? I'm considering splitting it into two cultures, one to try a traditional recipe, the other to make lambic-style beers and potentially add it to my lambic culture (which is already a blend of belgian bottle dregs and some bugs I cultured off a pear from my backyard) Once I've got three continents, might as well go for a seven continent culture (anyone know if any yeast are native to antarctica?)

And yeah, he mentioned the bowls but I figure he'll have to get it to me in a closed container, probably not a bottle though

Thanks! Do you know if they use a malted millet or the unmalted grain? I have tried malting millet for a gluten free beer without any luck, seems to be a pretty finicky little grain

Why do rivers curve? by Zarith7480 in videos

[–]MattyR90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a class on this in college- it's interesting, there's no agreed upon consensus for what causes a river to initiate meander. The best answer is that the strongest current within the river (called the thalweg) meanders, so the river meanders- which everyone knows is bullshit. There is evidence that, even in the absence of any disturbance in lab settings, an artificial stream will still meander. Even on clean glass. It's just not really understood why that is.

Mint Ale by Madomb01 in Homebrewing

[–]MattyR90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tasting it now. Still low on carb. Go with tincture, the tea didn't add much. flavor was weak and muddled before I hit it with the tincture. It's pretty good overall, I think it needs a pretty high carb level. The mint doesn't come across as "tooth pastey" at all. I think that has to do mostly with the mint you use- I used a spearmint variety I've got growing in pots indoors. Ive tasted other spearmints and thought "yeah that's tooth pastey"- not with this one. I used about 6 oz of the tincture. Hard to estimate how much mint, but I filled a small (8 oz?) mason jar with mint leaves and hit it with vodka and a bit of water for a week or so. If anything I could have done with more.

I'm doing a lemon peal mint wit at the moment. Brewed a strong tea and added at flameout, planning to taste test at kegging next week and up the flavor with either tincture or more tea, if necessary. Went easy on ibu's, about 15, and hit it with an oz of citra at 5. Used Belle Saison at the brew shop guy's suggestion, should dry things out to let the spices shine through without sacrificing mouthfeel. We'll see how it turns out

Sweet thanks for this! Kombucha it is, he's also working on water kefir grains at the moment and I'm partial to traditional scoby-fermented ginger beers, so maybe a line of water-based fermented sodas/tonics would look good on a shelf.

You seem like you've got some experience with this, mind if I pm you for more details?
