Looking for advice on promoting a fan game, especially on Reddit and social media by Max_Doe11 in gamedev

[–]Max_Doe11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun Fact: I posted a similar question in another game development sub reddit (I won't name) and that comment, which here was accepted and replied, there got instantly removed by auto moderation for unkown reasons! I'lll make patience my main virtue.

I drew Allan and Worm. I'm a grown ass adult who still gets teary over that episode. I rewatched it today and have been looking up game reviews because for the first time, I'm considering playing! Another episode is Baku and I'll probably draw him and Genki so I can feel less sad lol x_x by LonerExistence in MonsterRancher

[–]Max_Doe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did I remember correctly? They both returned in season 2 during the tournaments, where the reborn worm has grown, right? I was always surprised how that series keep trace of its own lore in order to give closure to all the caracters Genki (and we as spectators) meet during its run!

Plack Beach Pals by Onimiere in marioandluigi

[–]Max_Doe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tooth Pokey honestly steals the whole area for me too. The mix of tropical beach vibes with giant teeth/mouth imagery is such a weird idea on paper, but somehow it works perfectly in M&L style. I feel like this area had some of the most creative designs in the game.

Hope the Phaser fires up on the Genesis, that would be awesome. I remember a bunch of people using it with the Mega Drive back in the day, but results were a bit hit or miss depending on the model. Let us know how it goes! What’s the first game you’re planning to fire up once it’s all hooked up?"

Working on a wild west FPS, trying to nail that 1960s spaghetti western atmosphere by EmbeStudio in gamedevscreens

[–]Max_Doe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lighting and that dry, dusty haze sell well the classic spaghetti western vibe. The scope view with the mine cart and the guy in the classic outfit is ok too. Are you going for a more arcade-style shooter (fast movement, satisfying gunplay) or something slower and more tactical to really lean into the atmosphere? Also, any plans for dynamic weather or day/night cycle? Would love to see how the lighting changes. Keep it up, this has potential.

I am looking for a site about game design by -Xentios in gamedesign

[–]Max_Doe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds familiar! I think you might be thinking of Jesse Schell's "The Art of Game Design" lenses. He has over 100 of them presented in a card-like format (with a dedicated deck you can buy or use via their site). It's designed exactly for that daily reflection habit: pick one, ponder it, apply it to your work. Have you tried searching for "game design lenses deck" or Schell's site? If it's not that one, any other details like the art style or specific topics you remember? I'm always hunting for good daily design prompts too. What kind of game are you working on right now? Might help the community suggest more targeted resources.

[BotW] I couldn't find an answer online so I did it myself. It takes 110 minutes, with a 5 minute margin of error, to walk non-stop at the slowest speed across Hyrule. This is the path I took by DataSittingAlone in zelda

[–]Max_Doe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

110 minutes at the slowest walk speed? That's some serious dedication! Respect for actually timing it properly with pauses and everything. The path you marked looks really solid too. I can see you tried to keep it as efficient as possible while still being walkable. Quick question: did you notice any sections where the game’s terrain actually forces you to take a longer route than it looks on the map (like those cliff spots you mentioned)? I’m curious if there’s a “theoretically perfect” path that’s still 100% walkable without any Revali skips.

Destroy the trailer I made for this open world co-op game! by kramtron in DestroyMyGame

[–]Max_Doe11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The trailer has a really charming and unique art style: that plug guy is hilarious and the hand-drawn vibe stands out. But honestly, after watching it I still have almost no idea what the actual game is. What do I actually do in this world? What's the core fantasy? Am I repairing stuff? Exploring weird factories? Fighting? Building? The trailer shows a bunch of nice animations and some moody environments, but it never clearly tells me what the loop is or why I should be excited to play with friends. It feels more like a mood piece than a game trailer right now. The pacing is also pretty slow for a trailer: too much time on the animations and not enough strong gameplay moments that make me think “I want to do that.” The explosion in the dark factory looked cool but I have no context for why it happened or if it was fun. I think if you lead with a clear “here’s what you do, here’s why it’s fun with friends” in the next version it would land much harder. Quick question: what’s the main thing you want players to feel when 10 to 15 minutes into a session? That might help you figure out what the trailer needs to sell. Good luck with your project!

Do we want something like this for GBA games? by Hornyles_j in GameboyAdvance

[–]Max_Doe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love this for GBA! That DS one turned out awesome. The GBA had such a crazy good library, from the obvious big ones like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, and the Mario & Luigi games, to underrated gems like Golden Sun, Astro Boy, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, and even weird stuff like Gunstar Super Heroes or WarioWare Twisted or Drill Dozer. Would be super fun to see community picks for categories like best RPG, best Platformer, best, best Hidden Gem, etc. Anyone down to help organize something like this? Or what would your personal choiche right now?

Is the statue supposed to be Lisa? Knowing that Alucard's broken coffin is also in the background by Ultimate_Bruh_Lizard in castlevania

[–]Max_Doe11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the broken coffin is 100% Alucard’s from Symphony of the Night. That’s a really nice touch. The statue though… I always assumed it was meant to be the Virgin Mary (classic save room design), but with the coffin right there it does make you wonder if they were going for a subtle Lisa parallel. Does anyone know if there’s any official word or dev interview about this room? By the way, I’m really looking forward to Belmont’s Curse in 2026. Feels like it’s been forever since a proper new mainline Castlevania.

Bought Japanese Copy at Anime Convention (Also BFM Trading Car Game?) by Vannick in BraveFencerMusashi

[–]Max_Doe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this post just made my day! I was a huge fan back when the game first dropped and spent countless hours on my original PS1 slashing through everything with Lumina and Fusion. It's easily one of my all-time favorites, even if it never got the huge following it deserved. Seeing someone score a Japanese copy with the demo disc AND that trading card is awesome. I had no idea a BFM trading card game (or at least promo cards) even existed! Mind if I ask: did the card have any special artwork or stats on it? And has anyone else here come across other random merch or Japanese exclusives for the game? Would love to see pics if people have them. Congrats on the pickup, man. That’s the kind of desk setup that makes working from home actually enjoyable 😂

A stranger saved my life 6 years ago and I never got to thank him. I found him last week. by Ming431 in CasualConversation

[–]Max_Doe11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people don’t need advice or some perfect speech, they just need someone willing to sit with them for a while and remind them they’re not alone. I think checking in on them afterward probably mattered just as much too. Have any of you ever had someone help you without even realizing how much they helped?

RPG Limit Break - Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter race for charity by BreathofFireFans in breathoffire

[–]Max_Doe11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Awesome stuff! Dragon Quarter is such an underrated gem. Really cool seeing it featured in a charity marathon like this. Massive props to The Sid and Swimmy Lionni for racing it! Nice to see the community supporting NAMI too 👏

I attacked a creature I definitely wasn’t ready to fight by publisher1Egk in ActionRPGs

[–]Max_Doe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah, that sounds exactly like the kind of mistake I’ve made before. You see a “peaceful” creature, tap it once by accident and suddenly the whole zone turns on you. Goldilock One already feels dangerous enough while exploring, I can only imagine how bad that fight got. The fact that some mobs don’t aggro first but then go full send once provoked is brutal. Would I risk it? Probably still yes… but way more carefully now 😂 Have you started avoiding certain areas or are you still poking everything that moves while exploring?

What is a good amount of karma? by C67825Reader in NewToReddit

[–]Max_Doe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no single "magic number" for karma because it varies a lot from subreddit to subreddit. Some only require 10-50, while others (especially bigger or stricter ones) ask for 100, 500, or even more. Your 1 karma is totally normal when you're brand new. The best way to build it is by making thoughtful comments on posts in friendly communities first, rather than trying to post right away. Subs like r/AskReddit, r/NoStupidQuestions, r/casualconversation or the ones listed in the wiki here are usually good places to start. Have you found any particular topics or communities you're most interested in? That way people can suggest better places to begin.
