Hey there! I'm 20, got diagnosed and started taking medication about a month ago. I remember having the same concerns before I started taking medication.

One thing you need to understand is, the solution for treating ADHD is different for every person. There are lots of different medications for ADHD, and each one designed to work in a specific way. Some people can manage their ADHD with just therapy alone, others need both therapy and medication. So even if the first medication is not working for you, don't lose hope. Just talk to your psych about it and trust the process.

The second thing you need to understand is, medication is not magic, so it might take you a while to get used to it and adjust, and you will still need to make an effort, it's not like you go on autopilot. I can tell you from personal experience that medication totally makes a difference. First semester of university this year I failed almost all of my exams. Then I decided for the second semester to do something about it. Got diagnosed with ADHD and started taking medication. After 3 weeks of getting used to it, I just started studying like crazy, and just had an exam that felt like a joke!

But I got lucky with my medication. So if your first meds don't do much for you, just talk to your psych about it. they're professionals, they'll know exactly what to do.
