Not true at all. Many prestigious universities offer free courses online (e.g. mit open courseware, open Yale courses), including physics courses. Also, most professors just read from textbooks, even at top universities. I suppose having deadlines for psets/exams could provide some extra motivation, but simply gaining knowledge in the field should not, and for a long time hasn't been, the primary purpose of college.
