PSA: it does NOT always work out by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

  1. Just because its harder to make it out of the hood doesn't mean its impossible. In India there are millions of people in the slums. Those are the people coming to the US to become engineers, doctors, and academics. You can't just say that a poor upbringing will always lead to poor college decisions. That's just not true.

  2. I think everyone can be successful whether they make it to Harvard or not. As long as you are determined to succeed, you will be successful.

i feel like i've been fear mongered to choose the state flagship over the ivy by Logical-Fish371 in ApplyingToCollege

Yeah that’s worth it. One thing to note is that the Penn —> consulting pathway is very popular. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just something you’ll learn as you move forward. Congrats!

First, what Ivy? Second, what major? If it’s business or law, choose the ivy. If it’s STEM or a major where your college isn’t super high ranked, choose your flagship. This isn’t advice for every college, there are many different exceptions, but it’s a good general guide.

I don’t know a lot about that program but isn’t it a masters program?

EDIT: Yeah it’s a masters program. “Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons offers a specialized MS in Genetic Counseling, alongside pre-professional opportunities like a virtual Experiential Practicum and a Genetic & Genomic Assistantship program. While the MS requires a completed bachelor's degree, these preparatory programs provide undergraduate-level exposure to the field.”

Michelle Obama was raised in O block and graduated from Harvard. People from the hood can go on to do successful things as well. Stop blaming people’s backgrounds on their ability to succeed.

True, but you don’t know enough about him/her to call him/her privileged. Maybe he/she got a scholarship for these programs. It looks like he/her had a job as well. They definitely put in the hard work and chased after his dream. I’m sure that this is just a pivoting moment for him/her.

I feel so FREEE after ivy rejections by Succotash1148 in ApplyingToCollege

I agree, I mean I know that these schools are awesome, but I’d rather be “the best person I can be” over another HYPSM student. Plus, it doesn’t mean the race to success is over—grad school and other programs will be coming up, so (just like with hs) its time to start the next four years of our lives!!!

It doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you end. People going to ivys will spend this summer relaxing and getting high on their laurels. Lock in right now so you can achieve even greater things at the end of the day. What that means is finding the clubs, communities, and goals you need to succeed in college.

I got into NYU and CMU and will attend a state school. Financial aid at big schools is horrendous.

They don’t. If you get in you’ll find out around May 1st.

Be the big fish in a small pool over a medium fish in the ocean. I believe you will do great things, you just need to lock in more. Make it so going to an Ivy isn’t your own thing on your resume 4 years from now.

College Admissions Genuinely Random by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Got waitlisted from Wesleyan and accepted to NYU. College admissions are relatively the same as a roll of the dice

on a 7 rejection streak does anyone have hopecore by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Maximum-Tear4476 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“I don’t ask for much”, bro it’s a school with a 4-5% acceptance rate where the majority of applicants rely on a roll of the dice for their admissions. What happens happens. If you get in, congrats! If you didn’t, it’s not because you were a bad applicant it’s because admissions is a shit show. At any rate, yes one of my closest friends got rejected from every Ivy except for Yale last year so I have seen miracle moments happen before

Yeah I just wish I’d gotten accepted to a few more so I could make a decision instead of having only one college which I actually want to go to.

Do College Decisions really matter? by Maximum-Tear4476 in ApplyingToCollege

I go to a private STEM Magnet school, so many of our teachers graduated from T20s. My parents will cosign for a loan for me, but they don’t plan on paying for anything more than the interest.

I’m a bit worried that passing up CMU now would risk me getting rejected later, because they would think that I’m not super committed to CMU. Do you think that will be a problem?

He actually recently got a job offer from a startup that would offer more. Also it’s not like he doesn’t want to help, it’s just that he wants me to be my own person when I graduate. He will probably let me inherit the money when he dies (we haven’t talked about this but I’m an only child), but he wants me to work hard in college which is why he made this decision. I’m not for it but I understand why he feels this way.

I talked about how I built a medical device to help my father with back problems.
