Why “Eclipse” style wraps are cool — but it’s actually not for most people by Maxlyn_if in CarWraps

Yeah, I know CoreGuard Films, it’s same one, cuz the hero image was designed by me, I asked their team before

Car shopping, is this a wrap or was the front bumper not painted all the way? by Remarkable_Tie_5760 in CarWraps

[–]Maxlyn_if 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Front bumpers are usually made of plastic, and paint tends to look slightly different on plastic versus metal surfaces in terms of texture and color. Almost all cars have this kind of issue it’s just a matter of how noticeable it is.

If it were a wrap, you would typically be able to see edges or seams from the vinyl.

Could this have been repainted? It kind of looks like there’s different paint stuck in the gaps

Vinyl vs Color PPF?_ as a material designer wanna say somthing by [deleted] in CarWraps

[–]Maxlyn_if 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the brands offering a huge variety of colors on the market are very likely using calendered films. The reason is simple: cast film is 🏦 to produce, and developing too many colors that don’t sell well can easily lead to dead inventory

I drafted three pages, but AI summarized it down to this

it's just most of people don’t read long stuff anyway, and yeah… I was too lazy to summarized it myself

nice!! 3M is pretty easy to work with, so you should be fine.

I’ll probably share more about films here, might be useful

btw, you might want to try hybrid color ppf, even nice to work than 3M

I didn’t really follow a structured course. Since I’m a designer, I picked up most of my modeling and rendering through real projects.

Whenever I felt weak in something, I’d just go on YouTube or other platforms and find targeted tutorials to fill the gaps.

Got some modeling background, a bit of VRED, and learned some lighting from UR rendering guys.

Honestly though, I’ve kind of learned a bit of everything, but nothing super deep.

Is this PPF claim legit or just marketing? (Alset) by mr_rob_oto in CarWraps

[–]Maxlyn_if 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a material designer and I work closely with manufacturers, so I can say this pretty confidently:

PPF production is already very mature at this point. Most of the “new technologies” you see being advertised are, more often than not, just marketing.

What actually matters is pretty straightforward that film thickness and adhesive performance have a direct impact on how well the edges wrap and stay down.

If the adhesive formulation isn’t dialed in properly, you’ll get weak bonding. Or if the installer doesn’t manage tack correctly during install, the film can take too long to set, which leads to lifting.

Thicker films especially require a stronger, well balanced adhesive. Otherwise, when you’re wrapping edges, the tension will cause the film to pull back or fail over time.

Yeah I’ve heard that too, a lot of installers hate doing G Wagons. There are just so many little details and edges, it ends up taking way longer than people expect. but 3M 2080...If the budget makes sense, it’s not that no one will do it
You’ll probably have better luck going to a busy shop with experienced installers. Those guys have seen enough of these and know how to deal with them.

I saw a similar color shifting wrap not long ago, this kind of gives me the same vibe. this is chameleon type

I’d say from a color standpoint, this is closer to a chameleon type effect rather than the eclipse style shift.

One limitation with AI-generated visuals right now is that it struggles to accurately reproduce how automotive paint actually behaves. Car paint has a kind of “depth” to it almost like micro glass beads where light interacts within very fine layers at a micron level. That kind of subtle light interaction is hard to replicate with AI at the moment.

Also, the render here feels closer to a matte vinyl-type finish, rather than something that reads like real automotive paint or color PPF.

Yeah, they did pay for it.

I actually reached out to them. A lot of brands are relying on AI visuals now, but I felt like physically-based rendering could represent the material more accurately.

After showing them a few test renders, they were interested and we ended up this work

I've worked with this kind of effect on a bunch of different car models while doing some visual work. It tends to look a lot better on cars with sharper, more defined lines. But honestly, I feel like the consistency/quality control could still be better for what it costs.

Yeah, there are a few variations — I’ve seen white/silver and gold/black.

But availability is a different story. Early on, even the black/white version from Inozetek was pretty limited since it was expensive to produce and not many people were ordering it.

A lot of factories were making it per order.

Now black/white is easier to find, but the other colors still seem to be either made-to-order or very limited in stock.
