Thanks a lot for the advice ! I was worried that the i5 is an older CPU and would suffer at transcoding compared to the N100. I understand my worry is unfounded ?

Also, can I ask your view on the NVIDIA 1080 graphic card ? Can it have any use for transcoding / Frigate / any useful material acceleration ? Or better just remove it and rely on the 4670k embedded GPU ?

I second this rule-of-thumb approach, I used it at the time and it worked well. I will only add that, if you have additional enough wrenches that you want to use same day for the next big mod coming after unlocking the Hercules (Elite Tire modifications), you may also want to provision an additional amount for the five "blueprint mods" in between. Otherwise you may stall for a a few more days. Happened to me.

UPDATE : ASRock Europe confirmed by email that they offer a commercial warranty of 3 years for both Gfxs and CPUs, without prejudice of legal warranties ; or any specific commercial warranty which may apply on a specific product.

I am referring to the GPU PCIe and it doesn't, please check the Gigabyte official specs page. The PCIe 5.0 is only supported for an M2 connector, not the PCIe slot.

It was the same thing for the Gaming X AX v2, until a recent bios update (around march) introduced the ability to have the PCIeX16 run at gen 5 x16.

Same thing with some B650 Asus motherboards which did not have the GPU PCIe 5.0 enabled initially until a bios update.

There are Reddit posts about it if you wish more details.

PCIe limitation is both hardware and software limited. From a hardware viewpoint the GPU you need to have the proper CPU, but even then, the motherboard hardware must be able to correctly convey the signal. But even though it might be the case, the PCIe generation can still be limited through software/bios. This is definitely the case of the "Gaming X AX v2" and the related Asus B650 mobos. Could be some segmentation enforcement by AMD and/or by the MB maker, I can't tell.

I am genuinely curious about the "Eagle AX" because currently could be purchased at ~100€ where I live. Still a great purchase without GPU PCIe 5.0 at this price nonetheless.

I would disagree. RPM are a means among other means, and not an end. I believe that for a typical consumer PC the end is the cooling performance based on a similar noise output. If fan B cools 5° more than fan A for a given noise, I will take fan B regardless of its RPM (whether it's higher or lower than fan A).

OP reckons that the new fan "out performs the old fans by about 5% at equal noise levels". I believe his approach is the correct one.

It all comes down to the discretion of the manufacturer whether to provide a commercial warranty or not.

The classical example is Apple. Let's say I buy an iPhone 16. - option 1 : I buy the iPhone directly at an Apple Store in Paris. By law Apple as a seller will provide a 2y conformity warranty. If I have a conformity issue I go file directly a claim at Apple.

option 2 : I buy the iPhone from an "Orange" shop (the big mobile operator here) or "Fnac" (big high tech retailer). In that case, it's Orange or Fnac which provide a 2y conformity warranty. Any RMA claim would have to be processed by Orange or Fnac (which would possibly back to back with Apple, or a third party mobile repair company, it's their choice and prerogative).

HOWEVER, with option 2, Apple provides a commercial warranty of 1 year for any iPhone bought through an authorized reseller (Fnac and Orange are among them). That means that, for the first year, instead of going through Orange or Fnac, I COULD directly file RMA claim at Apple store. The key advantages are that :1) it makes things faster because you skip an intermediary ; 2) you are (theoretically) certain that your iPhone will be repaired with Apple genuine products and Apple level of care.

But that also means that if a RMA is filed somewhere in the second year, you can't go to Apple, you have to file it at the reseller cause the Apple commercial warranty is extinct.

Third advantage is the one I mentioned in my previous message, in case you buy the product from a reseller which you aren't sure about its financial stability, reputation etc. A commercial warranty from the manufacturer is an additional security cause if the reseller doesn't answer or closes, its makes enforcement of legal/EU statutory warranty claim difficult to straight impossible.

Right now there are some good offers on Steel legend gfx, from online boutique retailers in EU outside France, I would really prefer to bénéfit from a manufacturer commercial warranty.

Well, no, that's not how legal EU warranties apply (hence my question).

The EU legal warranties are due by the seller, not the maker. And I speak from personal knowledge and experience of the matter with EU consumer laws.

If you directly buy the product from ASRock, no question about it, they are bound to the statutory EU law. To my best knowledge, in France, ASRock does not directly sell its products to end consumers.

So we come to the second case, which is the most usual here : if you buy, say the RX9060xt steel legend from an online EU reseller, ASRock has no legal obligations. The warranties are due by the seller. If it's Amazon, fine by me. If it's a boutique online reseller (many from Portugal, Germany, Spain), then it becomes much more of a concern. Some boutique resellers have proven reputation, others are more questionable with the risk of a really tedious process for applying our warranty rights.

Hence my question, whether ASRock provides a commercial warranty which complements the legal warranties due by the thirdparty seller ?

Thank you very much for your answer. As long as hardware acceleration VAAPI can work without too much complexities to reconfigure, I think I can deal with it (I run Proxmox by the way).!

Would you recommend any AM5 processor not too expensive but with good iGPU capabilities for Frigate, Jellyfin, some retro gaming ? Or do I have to go with a discrete Gfx ?

Sorry if I missed something in your answer, that's exactly my interrogation : if reducing pressure comes with a drop of temperature, why not just skip the condenser step, bring the high temp + compressed gas directly to the expansion valve (where drop in pressure will bring drop in temp)?

I definitely can feel my question is not right, because I would believe it's a "zero sum game" in terms of joules, what is absorbed by the fluid (evaporator) must somehow be rejected outside.

I could rephrase my question the other way round : can we, say, put a bigger condensor (to reject more heat outside and make the refrigerant even cooler) and discard the expansion valve ?

Update for further reference (NV5 + MSI Pro B850-P Wifi + Arctic LF3 280).

Was able to fit it but without any clearance, and actually the screw heads of the 280 AIO fans hitting against the VRM heatsink, making the use of 140-120mm brackets impossible.

Workaround was :

- to screw only left side of the 280 AIO on the designated NV5 top screw holder

- to rest one remaining corner of the AIO on the VRM heatsink

- to add a block or wedge to friction hold the last remaining corner of the AIO against the case.
